(About The Images)
1858 Large Letters. NGC MS-65. 1858 Large Letters. NGC MS-65.
Lot Title: 1858 Large Letters. NGC MS-65.
Description: The Nickel-To-A-Doughnut Collection. Fantastic plate luster resonates with booming authority through the fields around the eagle's motif, hesitating to penetrate beyond an area that surrounds his outstretched wings. This central area demonstrates more dense powder-bronze toning that appears to derive from a very faint fingerprint. By 1858, the novelty of the new small-sized cents had not worn off (after sixty-five years of the bigger coppers) and specimens were still being set aside for posterity; this might well have been such a gem, gently plucked out of circulation between the fingers of some bygone benefactor. At any rate, neither side exhibits any distracting marks, and strike seems to be rather nice for the type. (PCGS# 002019)
