Lot Title:

1873 Open 3. NGC PF-66 RB.
Description:
French Connection Estate. 35 graded PF-66 (RB), 2 higher at NGC. As a proof-only issue of limited mintage (500 struck), 1873 can be located with strong details, and this impressive very gem example supports that contention. Either side exhibits exceedingly fine definition, except that the reverse displays modest softness at the tops of ATES. This striking characteristic seems to be diagnostic for the "open 3" sub-variety, perhaps because they were actually restrikes of the earlier "closed 3" examples. Lovely, fine satiny texture dominates the entire coin and most certainly eliminates any chance of a cameo designation, though the astute observer will find a subtle shift in texture between the letters and the fields.
