Description:

French Connection Estate. Efforts by distinguished luminaries within the numismatic world have helped bring to the fore the allure and appeal of truly original coins, as the old school of thought that "brilliant is best" may be slowly becoming displaced by "original is better". No coin can be more original than one that was purchased directly from the mint and placed into careful storage for posterity, never to be handled or misused in any matter, and that is precisely how this small miracle came to be. The consignor's great grand-father purchased proof singles from Philadelphia and lovingly placed them into small cardboard boxes where they remained untouched for a century. Upon consignment to this sale, the coins were extracted with extreme care, recorded and then placed into inert holders for submission to NGC. During the intervening decades, the coins never saw the light of day, meaning they have remained essentially untouched forever. Both sides of this profoundly beautiful superb gem are awash in sweeping olive-cobalt tones that appear exceedingly dark at some viewing angles, but explode with life and vibrancy otherwise. The Scotsman Cataloger's Choice award recognizes valiant efforts to resist the "conservation" trend long prevalent in numismatics, and when a coin survives this long with vintage quality intact, it deserves celebration. NGC's population reports suggests twelve coin at PF-67 (though this may be the only "plus" example), and but three graded higher. (PCGS# 006555)
