Lot Title:
|
1925-D PCGS MS-65.
|
Description:
|
78 graded MS-65, 7 higher at PCGS. Branch-mint nickels of the 1920s deserve the reputation of weaker details struck off of worn dies, because the sister mints had to put up with extended use of dies that should have been replaced far more frequently than they were. The 1925-D suffered some of these ill effects, although perusing past sales records show an interesting phenomenon often seen for the issue, that being weaker obverses paired against sharper reverse details. That is exactly the case here, as the obverse shows decent, but not strong details, while the reverse impresses with precise definition that looks more like the Philadelphia products of the era. A single hit on the left side of the braid seems to be the sole grading factor, and the coin features decidedly interesting golden-blue patina very similar to that often seen on the 1938-D. (PCGS# 003955)

Lemon-grey patina permeates the obverse, while the reverse displays iron-grey coloration. Denver was struggling with production quality in 1925, and that is one reason for somewhat soft details,... |

The 1925-D derives original character from powdery-gold patina, while the 1935-D proudly displays generous mint frost and only a tint of pale gold. Two coin lot. |

1925-D does not immediately come to mind as a key to the buffalo nickel series, but it is a difficult coin to find well struck. The present dusky-gold example follows that trend, although sharpness... |

Well, either I have a crooked head or the reverse is rotated about 15% counterclockwise. A breath of golden toning covers areas on both sides. There are a few toning flecks, but they are not very... |
