1963-A Star $20 Federal Reserve Note, San Francisco, with double offset error. 1963-A Star $20 Federal Reserve Note, San Francisco, with double offset error.
Lot Title: 1963-A Star $20 Federal Reserve Note, San Francisco, with double offset error.
Description: Liberty Mast Estate. The error is even more impressive in-hand than it sounds. A large triangular portion of the back has been neatly inverted in strong green ink toward the far left of the front, while the back of the note perfectly corresponds with an identically shaped triangle of obverse design showing. Terrific on its own as a two-sided error, but also finely preserved at the Choice CU grade, and of course, the star turns this remarkable error into a veritable treasure.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

167The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$725.00
Consecutive pair of 1928-A $1 Silver Certificates with inverted back. ...
Liberty Mast Estate. That these circulated to moderate extent before being identified as error notes, and then united is somewhat remarkable -- the differing wear patterns do suggest the notes did...
168The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$450.00
1928 $5 Legal Tender with inverted back. F.
Liberty Mast Estate. The error wasn't discovered for some time after the note entered circulation, and it has been modestly pressed to even out the creases. "1.5" appears in pencil off to the right.
169The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$310.00
1934 $1 Silver Certificate Funny Back with inverted back. VG.
Liberty Mast Estate. Our grade of VG should prove to be highly conservative, but the usual creases figure prominently into that assessment. Though lightly flattened from proper storage, no attempt...
170The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$425.00
1934 $20 Federal Reserve Note, Kansas City, with inverted back. F.
Liberty Mast Estate. Strongly toned for the grade but certainly presentable and modestly pressed. Even margins on the front and back. The inverted back went unnoticed for a long time, as is usually...
171The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$425.00
1935 $1 Silver Certificate with missing third print (seal and serial...
Liberty Mast Estate. Neither seal nor serial number appears on the front, both having been completely missed. Pleasing AU grade with a great, stark monochromatic appearance.
172The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$2,200.00
1935-E $1 Star Silver Certificate with inverted signatures. F.
Liberty Mast Estate. This silver certificate single only grades Fine, but it is a "star" note, which greatly enhances the appeal of the error. The signatures were printed upside-down on the front...
173The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$260.00
1950-A $5 Star Federal Reserve Note, New York, left shift third print...
Liberty Mast Estate. Were this not a star note, the shift might almost be overlooked as a minor error. That said, that all-important star strongly elevates the significance of the error, and the...
174The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$775.00
1950-A $5 Federal Reserve Note, New York, with mismatched serial...
Liberty Mast Estate. Three digits mismatch as 852/700 at the end of the serial numbers, and it is interesting to speculate whether the upper digit was stuck at "700" during the entire intervening run...
175The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$230.00
1950-A $10 Star Federal Reserve Note, St. Louis, with unprinted...
Liberty Mast Estate. The foldover to the front evaded all three printings, so the fold must have occurred during the first printing, then unfolded during subsequent printings, allowing a front design...
176The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$650.00
1950-B $10 Federal Reserve Note, Cleveland, with accordion foldover to...
Liberty Mast Estate. An astonishing note, the lower right corner features an accordion foldover to front, and when fully opened, reveals a beautiful butterfly with its own smaller foldover. AU with...
177The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$300.00
1950-C $20 Federal Reserve Note, Chicago, with partially missing...
Liberty Mast Estate. The left serial number lacks three digits entirely and most of another, and in a sense, this could be seen as "mismatched" serial numbers. But for now, let's properly call it a...
178The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$360.00
1953 $5 Star Silver Certificate with right shift third print error....
Liberty Mast Estate. The shift right embeds serial numbers into design elements, affecting Lincoln's portrait as well as the upper right denomination. Impressive as that alone would be, this...
179The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$600.00
1963-A $10 Federal Reserve Note, Richmond, with MISMATCHED serial...
Liberty Mast Estate. E63/E64 combination represents nicely mismatched serial numbers for this 1963 issue $10. The grade borders on full XF and might well be all there for many collectors looking for...
181The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$230.00
1969-A $1 FRN St. Louis, and a 1981 $10 FRN Philadelphia, with major...
Liberty Mast Estate. For the $1 bill, the impression of the back of the note onto the front is extraordinarily vivid, almost as if it had been printed directly (though of course, it is "mirror...
182The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$355.00
1974 $1 Federal Reserve Note, Atlanta, with double foldover to front...
Liberty Mast Estate. Grotesque size of the foldover produces a large butterfly and a note with considerable eye-appeal. How it managed to circulate down to the better VF level almost defies any...
183The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$320.00
1974 $1 Federal Reserve Note, Cleveland, with accordion foldover to...
Liberty Mast Estate. Here is probably the most astonishing foldover error from this remarkable collection. The right side was folded over to the back up on first printing, and then rather amazingly,...
184The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$330.00
1974 $1 Federal Reserve Note, St. Louis, with third print on back. ...
Liberty Mast Estate. Perfect margins might carry the grade a bit higher than Choice CU, but what's really important, of course, is the third printing erroneously placed on the back of the note. A...
185The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$250.00
1974 $1 Federal Reserve Note, St. Louis, with printed tear error....
Liberty Mast Estate. After the first printing, a jagged internal tear to the front became imprinted by the third printing such that the serial number has impressed the first and second numerals...
186The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$300.00
Nine 1974 $1 error notes, PMG or PCGS.
Miami Doctor Consignment. Nice variety in error notes, comprised of 1974 $1 issues, makes up this grouping, and some show provenance to the James Wilson Collection. A trio of offset printing errors...
187The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$240.00
1974 $5 Federal Reserve Note, San Francisco, with foldover to front...
Liberty Mast Estate. Broad and impressive, the foldover received close to the entire treasury seal upon third printing, and 15% of the serial number to boot. We grade the note Choice CU despite a...
188The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$240.00
1974 $20 Federal Reserve Note, Richmond, with foldover to front. AU.
Liberty Mast Estate. Choice for AU, especially since one can guess it wouldn't have circulated long. The front right has a nice, big fold toward the front, and bears the treasury seal along with at...
189The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$200.00
1974 $20 Star Federal Reserve Note, St. Louis, with foldover to back...
Liberty Mast Estate. The foldover retains an untrimmed portion that adds much interest to what would have been a fairly minor error. On top of that, this is a star note, impressively preserved at...
190The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$75.00
1974 $20 Federal Reserve Note, St. Louis, with missing digit in serial...
Liberty Mast Estate. The sixth digit does not appear for either serial number -- a rather remarkable coincidence. On top of that, this is a note in spectacular grade, likely to command much gem...
191The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$205.00
1974 $50 Federal Reserve Note, San Francisco, with foldover to front...
Liberty Mast Estate. The error is positively stunning, with the treasury seal placed well into the first printing, while some 80% of the serial number also appears there. On top of that, the upper...
192The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$240.00
1974 $100 Star Federal Reserve Note, Chicago, with offset printing...
Liberty Mast Estate. Oh-so-close to unc, the lower right corner has been just very gently folded once, or else this would indeed be Choice CU. The overprint on the back is particularly attractive,...
193The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$230.00
1974 $100 Federal Reserve Note, New York, with blank back error, punch...
Liberty Mast Estate. Although punch-cancelled by an alert employee at an unknown bank, this century note possesses considerable charm nonetheless, as it features an utterly blank back. The punches...
194The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$130.00
1976 $2 Federal Reserve Note, Richmond, with broad ink smear. CU.
Liberty Mast Estate. Such an error does not always command widespread recognition, but this is on a two dollar bill, and the wide swath of deep black ink down the right side definitely looks...
195The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$230.00
1976 $2 Federal Reserve Note, St. Louis, with offset printing error....
Liberty Mast Estate. A minor offset printing error will usually elicit only mild interest, but this example rises above the norm, as Jefferson's portrait shows rather clearly (inverted of course) on...
196The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$360.00
1976 $2 Federal Reserve Note, New York, with mismatched serial number...
Liberty Mast Estate. A nice 5/6 mismatch occurs at the sixth digit, and being manifested on a 2-dollar note considerably elevates the appeal of the error. This is a gorgeous Choice CU example with...
197The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$370.00
1976 $2 Federal Reserve Note, New York, with mismatched prefix...
Liberty Mast Estate. Much less common than mere mismatched serial numbers, this 1976 $2 features a mismatched prefix pairing, with H/B the offending party. Extremely well preserved, this note could...

200The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$240.00
1977-A $10 Federal Reserve Note, Chicago, with foldover to front...
Liberty Mast Estate. Absolutely wonderful in nature, the foldover was large enough to receive most of the treasury seal and the final three digits of the serial number. Very nice! The note most...
201The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$160.00
1977 $1 Federal Reserve Note with missing district seal error. CHCU.
Liberty Mast Estate. The district seal simply does not exist at all for this 1977 $20 , and the 7s imprinted on the right side are quite faint. An exceptionally well preserved note that could...
202The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$60.00
1977 $50 Federal Reserve Note, Chicago, with insufficient print ink...
Liberty Mast Estate. The first and third printings produced normal detail, but the second printing failed to print about 15% of the design, resulting in mottled weakness overall. Preserved to high...
203The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$310.00
1977 $100 Federal Reserve Note, Cleveland, with major offset printing...
Liberty Mast Estate. The impression of the back design onto the front is exceptionally strong, especially for a high-denomination note like this, and most especially in very high grade. This note...
204The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$800.00
1981-A $20 Federal Reserve Note, New York, with mismatched serial...
Liberty Mast Estate. The first digits mismatch as 1/0 on this 1981 issue. We observe a very high grade for this error note, bordering on a gem grade due to proportional margins and outstanding...
205The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$500.00
Pair of Missing Overprint 1985 $1 Error notes. CU.
A pair of ones, both are missing the serial numbers and seals, giving them a stark appearance. A second glance reveals "J" nicely embossed on both notes.
206The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$425.00
1985 $10 Federal Reserve Note, St. Louis, with third print on back. ...
Liberty Mast Estate. Really nice, choice quality, showing clear ink and brilliant sheen for the paper. The front offers an exceptionally stark appearance without its third printing, which was...
207The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$310.00
1985 $50 Federal Reserve Note, St. Louis, with mostly blank back...
Liberty Mast Estate. Perhaps a fifth of the normal design appears in part on the back against the bottom margin, but it is missing everywhere else, and by that, we mean it is entirely missing! A...
208The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$100.00
1985 $50 Federal Reserve Note, Richmond, with insufficient ink on back...
Liberty Mast Estate. Possibly a contender for a gem grade, the front has a normal appearance while the back is practically blank, showing only minimal impression from the first printing. The ink is...
209The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$775.00
1985 $100 Federal Reserve Note with third print on back.
Liberty Mast Estate. Rather spectacular, the note shows seals and serial numbers printed on the back, with the front correspondingly stark in appearance, and rather lightly inked for that matter. In...
210The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$3,400.00
1988-A $20 Federal Reserve Note error - portion of third print on...
Liberty Mast Estate. The error is delicate, yet rather astounding and far from subtle at the same time. A slip of cardboard and masking tape became adhered to the center of the note and received...
211The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$200.00
1988-S $20 Federal Reserve Note, Richmond, with severe ink smear on...
Liberty Mast Estate. From the back, this note looks positively evil with such a humongous, menacing smear on the back, reminiscent of the dripping blood seen at the closing credits of a Dracula movie...
212The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$390.00
1990 $20 Federal Reserve Note, Atlanta, with third print on back...
Liberty Mast Estate. The third printing fits rather subtly within the back design of this 1990 $20, with both seals practically hidden in the bushes on either side of the White House. A normal note...
213The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$525.00
