(About The Images)
1877 PCGS VF-25. 1877 PCGS VF-25.
Lot Title: 1877 PCGS VF-25.
Description: Very attractive as the key date to the Indian cent series. LIBERTY appears to be more prominent than usual for the VF grade, and the entire coin retains appealing, bold details, right down to the top of each feather. Interestingly, some magenta-gold iridescence touches all the main highpoints of the design, and particularly accents the date. A tiny tick on the neck offers the only point of contact for the obverse, while the reverse displays a couple of stray handling marks, as it should for a mid-level grade. (PCGS# 002127)

High Estimate: $1,600.00

182The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$400.00
1877 ANACS GD-6.
Campania Estate. A very strong rim runs completely around the reverse, and the obverse rim shows slight flatness only at the upper-left quadrant, helping exemplify the ANACS choice-good grade level. ...
183The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$625.00
1877 NGC VF details/obverse scratched.
Steve Deckling Collection. Of the four light scratches visible on the obverse, any one would likely be forgivable all by itself, as they are old, not too deep, and blended well within the vintage...
321The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$1,200.00
1877 NGC VF-25 BN.
Traces of powdery magenta tone accent the Indian's headdress here and there, while the reverse shows many small splashes of sienna-brown. Needless to say, LIBERTY displays boldly on the headband, and...
322The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$5,250.00
1877 NGC MS-64 BN.
The obverse projects fantastic chocolate-brown patina over 95% of the surface, while the reverse retains substantial mint red color over some 70% of that side, meaning that in the overall scheme of...
328The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$310.00
1877 NGC AG-3.
New World Estate. The reverse easily grades fully Good, with a bold, strong outline that raises well above the fields. Only trivial weakness shows around the obverse periphery, placing the coin...
329The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$800.00
1877 NGC F-12.
LIBERTY almost shows up on the headband, and the feathers begin to show a small amount of detail at this near-Fine grade level. Perfect brown color with an occasional small contact mark or two on the...
466The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$475.00
1877 PCGS GD-4.
Slightly more legible than many 1877 cents certified as "G-4", the entire USofA, including "OF", may be easily read on the obverse, and Liberty's portrait shows some surprisingly bold definition. The...
467The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$750.00
1877 PCGS F details/cleaning, and a 1909-S, PCGS VG details/damage.
Close in terms of details, neither coin will win any beauty contests, but they should prove affordable to a tight budget. 1877 has surfaces brightened by an old cleaning, but also a few narrow...
468The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$1,825.00
1877 PCGS XF-40.
The consignor presented his grandfather's collection "raw" as a candidate for the auction, and though the set certainly offered some attractive coins (several in today's sale), this 1877 proved to be...
255The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$425.00
1877 About Good.
The reverse easily meets "good or better" standards, with a bold rim and some details within the wreath leaves. Only "OF" looks (extremely) weak on the obverse and this normally should still qualify...
256The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$370.00
1877 PCGS AG-3.
Perhaps graded during a more conservative week at PCGS, this 1877 might well have achieved a full G-4 grade on other occasions. The reverse fully grades G-6, with a strong rim and even a couple of...
257The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$550.00
1877 ANACS GD-6.
LIBERTY fails to show more than a hint of presence on the headband, but of course that is expected of only a G-6 grade. On the other hand, both rims prove to be 100% complete on both sides, an...
242The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$900.00
1877 ANACS F-12.
Tough to locate "nice" at the Fine level or lower, this key Indian cent shows off, at minimum, the top of each letter in LIBERTY, with LI and RT virtually full. Signs of an ancient cleaning have...
243The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$1,900.00
1877 PCGS XF-40.
Snow explains that the entire production of 1877 cents occurred January 4 through January 25th, which obviously explains the eternal key-date status of the coin. LIBERTY is bold as can be for this...
244The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$2,400.00
1877 ANACS PF-62 RB.
For a complete set at uncirculated grade levels, a proof 1877 cent is often used in place of the more expensive circulation strike, saving the collector many hundreds of dollars if he does not insist...
245The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$3,400.00
1877 PCGS PF-63RB.
Unlike circulation strikes, the reverse exhibits full details at the center of the coin, a usual soft spot. Needless to say, given the proof format, definition everywhere else could not be stronger,...
373The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$575.00
1877 PCGS GD-4.
Surfaces are a little glossy, yet well retoned from an ancient cleaning, with a net sum zero effect overall at this, the "good" grade level. The obverse rim displays a bit more completeness than is...
374The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$750.00
1877 ANACS VG details/scratched obverse/net G-4, and a 1909-S Indian...
The "scratch" on the 1877 obverse is hardly noticeable. It projects upward from the truncation of Liberty's neck, but it is fully toned and is only seen after the viewer knows where to look. ...
375The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$1,000.00
1877 NGC F-12 BN.
Technically, individual letters in LIBERTY cannot be easily read, because tiny handling marks have disturbed the vicinity of this all-important grading factor, but all the other requirements for the...
376The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$1,775.00
1877 NGC XF-45 BN.
A solid circulated example of this key date. The typical marks expected for the grade are present, including a few small contact marks in front of the profile. Perhaps a bit soft in the details...
246The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$435.00
1877 About Good.
Simply perfect for AG-3, since the planchet is quite attractive, and only the upper obverse is worn into the rim. The reverse has the appearance of a solid G-6! An outstanding key example for the...
247The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$575.00
1877 PCGS Genuine.
Genuine-97 indicates "environmental damage", and little time is required to realize that the surfaces are overly dark and moderately granular due to exposure to a corrosive environment. This is some...
291The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$650.00
1877 ANACS VG-8 Details/cleaned.
The cleaning ascribed by ANACS is not drastic, but has resulted in an odd mint-blue overtone across both sides. Fortunately, the equivalent of at least three letters remains in LIBERTY, and this...
292The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$1,000.00
1877 ICG F-12.
Incomplete dentilation on the obverse and weakness at the Indian's headband leads to some dissension from the ICG F-12 grade. Because no single letter in LIBERTY is readable, a grade of [VG-8] seems...
203The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$1,650.00
1877 PCGS VF-35.
Very deep, low contrast sienna-mahogany patina completely dominates each side of this important key small-cent, and provides a supremely original appearance that most connoisseurs will appreciate. ...
204The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$725.00
1877 VF/reverse scratches.
The obverse is virtually perfect at the grade of VF-20, with LIBERTY full and bold except for softness in the usual trouble spot: "BE". The upper diamond is very nearly complete. Three sharp,...
138The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$627.00
1877 Good.
The top of three letters can barely be made out on the headband, and the reverse rim is full and bold. Just slight merging of the obverse rim occurs at STATES, making this a somewhat nicer key than...
139The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$785.00
1877 VG/cleaned.
An unimportant cleaning is scarcely visible at all until the highpoints are examined with a loupe, and the glossy surfaces thereupon are revealed. However, from any normal viewing distance, this VG-8...
140The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$1,475.00
1877 PCGS VF-30.
Close examination of the dark, dusky surfaces will reveal unexpected flashes of slightly bright red color, and in particular, some reddish surface can be glimpsed within the "O" of ONE on the reverse....
464The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$525.00
1877 PCGS Genuine.
Corrosion leaves no part of this key untouched, though the overall color scheme is highly acceptable, and collectors of the series are accustomed to the level of surface roughness shown. "Good"...
465The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$1,100.00
1877 PCGS Genuine.
Liberty's cheek has been ground down to attenuate the effects of a presumably deep dig, and the whole coin burnished and retoned a slightly glossy olive-brown color. A few other odd digs and scars...
466The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$750.00
1877 NGC GD-4 BN.
An 1877 could not get any better than this in a G-4 holder! We all know that this low an assessment usually spells doom for central details of this key date, but this particular coin features quite a...
467The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$475.00
1877 VG/lightly corroded.
Sienna-brown patina is not entirely unattractive and helps to mitigate the roughness of the corroded surfaces. BERT is detectable on the head band, and the balance of the details on either side...
468The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$850.00
1877 PCGS VG-10.
"LI" and perhaps the top of "ERTY" shows, and apparently that is sufficient to warrant the VG-10 grade. Two diagonal old scratches are noteworthy on the obverse, including one on Liberty's upper...
469The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$875.00
1877 PCGS VG-10.
An 1877 Indian head cent graded VG-10 by PCGS.
470The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$1,550.00
1877 PCGS VF-20.
None of the diamonds are visible on the ribbon, but LIBERTY is sharply defined, and full dentilation shows on all the rims except the lower reverse. These are indications of at least a VF-20 grade. ...
471The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$1,550.00
1877 PCGS VF-25.
Startling for the grade, some original mint red actually STILL remains hidden in the very deepest recesses of the details! This is virtually unheard of for an Indian cent at the VF-25 level, yet it...
472The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$7,000.00
1877 PCGS PF-66RB.
Many lighting angles employed to view and appreciate this astounding 1877 proof Indian cent will give the impression that the coin is fully RED, though the "RB" designation provided on the PCGS insert...
524The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$400.00
1877 PCGS FR02.
A textbook case of "silent net grading", whereby this key Indian cent displays obvious G-4 or better details and superb color, but is afflicted with surface damage almost certainly caused by exposure...
525The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$425.00
1877 About Good.
A grade of G-4 barely -- just barely -- befits this key to the Indian cent series. USofA is readable in its entirety, though "OF AM" is merged with the rim, while the reverse offers a full rim and...
526The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$350.00
1877 AG.
Merging of the obverse rim with "TES OF AM" is a common characteristic of the business strike 1877 Indian head cent -- practically to the point of being diagnostic of a genuine coin with so much wear....
527The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$625.00
1877 ANACS GD-4.
A perfectly graded key Indian head cent whose reverse is actually stronger than the indicated grade. This is a completely original coin that has never been molested in any way, and the date is...
220The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$600.00
1877 PCGS Genuine.
No grade is indicated on the PCGS insert, though the coin is proclaimed as "genuine". Your cataloger feels that the strong date and relatively good rims should qualify for a G-6 assessment. Dark...
221The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$550.00
1877 AG.
A full reverse rim and 80% complete obverse rim just barely qualify for a full G-4 grade, and fortunately there are no problems or issues requiring consideration in a net overall assessment. Nearly...
222The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$310.00
1877 ANACS VG Details, Net AG-3, corroded.

223The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$775.00
1877 PCGS GD-6.
Elsewhere in our sale is an 1877 graded VG-10 by PCGS, yet it is remarkable how closely the present G-6 approaches that coin in terms of central details. In fact, the coins are virtually twins, except...
224The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$950.00
1877 PCGS VG-10.
Pleasing, original surfaces display the perfect leather-brown color that knowledgeable collectors prefer for their circulated, mid-grade small cents. None of the letters in LIBERTY is individually...
225The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$1,800.00
1877 NGC XF-40 BN.
No diamonds are apparent on the ribbon, and some of the shield lines merge on the right. Completely and unquestionably original, with color that fluctuates between sienna and olive brown.
226The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$4,500.00
1877 NGC MS-63 RB.
The auction catalog you are perusing today has descriptions of numerous wonderful coins, but setting aside outright monetary value, your cataloger suggests that the present lot is one of the most...
445The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$750.00
1877 Indian head cent, ANACS PF-08
While business-strike examples of this date almost always have a soft reverse that diminishes the inner corners of "N" and "EN" in the denomination, proofs are always sharp in that area. That...
446The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$13,250.00
1877 Indian Head cent, NGC MS-66 RB
It is inevitable that in a typical environment, a freshly struck, red copper coin will begin to fade in color, slowly acquiring bits and pieces of brown patina and eventually becoming brown all over. ...
268The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$475.00
1877 AG-3.
This key date cent has even brown toning gracing its undamaged surfaces. The date is bold, and the reverse has full rims.
318The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$625.00
1877 PCGS GD-4.
Wonderful example for the ascribed grade for this semi-key date issue, which has the second lowest recorded Indian Head Cent mintage. Its unmarred surfaces have a milk chocolate aspect. The date and...
319The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$550.00
1877 GD-6.
Presumably, whatever caused the curious toned depression perceived on the reverse of this key-date coin correspondingly created a slight bulge on the obverse. Otherwise, the medium brown surfaces...
298The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$425.00
1877 About Good.
The wear on this tough date Indian Cent is smooth and natural. There are no major marks or damage, and it is totally original. It almost has full Good detail.

1877 F-12.
This totally original Indian Cent has chocolaty brown color and minimal wear for the grade. The devices have great detail, and there are no distractions worthy of mention. It seems as though most...
871The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$600.00
1877 VG-10.
This is the key date in the Indian Head Cent series having the second lowest mintage of this type issue. An even brown hue copiously bedecks its surfaces -- and a few minute ticks are scattered,...
872The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$1,950.00
1877 PCGS XF-40.
Uniform brown surfaces enrich the unhampered fields of this desirable key date. A scant tick or two can be noticed with a strong glass. The details in the Indian's bonnet and on the reverse's wreath...

This key date to the Indian Head Cent series is normally found in grades of Fine and below. The example offered in this lot had been subjected to a light cleaning in its past, but the surfaces now...
1035The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$3,100.00
1877 SEGS MS-62 BN.

335The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$925.00

A pleasing, lower graded example of this very esteemed key date to the Indian Head Cent series. Although appearing to have been lightly cleaned, this piece has almost a full Liberty on its headband,...
336The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$1,450.00
1877 F-15.
A more eminently struck example of this key date from this popular series. The typical diagnostically weak central reverse portion, notably on the "N" of ONE, establishes its authenticity. A meager...
