(About The Images)
1926-S PCGS MS-64. 1926-S PCGS MS-64.
Lot Title: 1926-S PCGS MS-64.
Description: One hundred and forty-nine graded MS-64, 12 higher, and no 1926-S has ever graded above MS-65 at PCGS, implying MS-64 as the finest practical grade for most collectors. Interestingly, at the time of this publication, 1924-S and 1926-S tie precisely for the number of MS-64 coins graded, but PCGS has been very stingy grading "gem" examples of this latter date, placing urgent pressure on the demand for the best available MS-64 coins. This could be one such candidate. An issue famed for poor strikes and faulty planchets, reviewing this coin makes such concerns dissipate rapidly. While not fully struck to the maximum possible level of detail, each side displays as much sharpness as can be had for 1926-S including a very strong horn, and one can just make out the end of the bison's tail. The obverse details have been brought up to high resolution, with an extremely bold date and fine details along the length of each feather. The top of each letter in LIBERTY shows perceptible softness, which is the case for practically every 1926-S in existence, and uppermost relief in the braid isn't quite complete. Perhaps most remarkable of all from an aesthetic standpoint, this key nickel provides a fascinating array of quasi-prooflike qualities, including a delicate hint of reflectivity in the fields and scattered about the low-relief areas. This entire aesthetic effect benefits from a deft touch of ice-blue toning, intermingled with frosty highlights. At the precise center of the obverse appears a very delicate spray of carbon flecking, but its visual impact disappears at normal arm's length viewing. (PCGS# 003959)
