(About The Images)
1899 PCGS PF-63CAM. 1899 PCGS PF-63CAM.
Lot Title: 1899 PCGS PF-63CAM.
Description: Mintage: 99. The emission of coronet gold proof coins from any era will always be startling to collectors used to the billions-upon-billions of coins that seem to be struck on a continuous basis for today's buying public. These were special coins, treated with royal respect and produced to high standard. Not frequently today does a coin's mintage require a listing only two digits long. Naturally, such brief use of proof dies permitted practically all struck coins to offer cameo effect, and the present jewel leaves no doubt at all about nearly profound contrast. Indeed, the natural contrast appears nearly ULTRA at arm's length, but the mirrors on the pebble-textured reverse may not be quite deep enough to permit a designation upgrade. Closer inspection reveals a collection of tiny blemishes and micro-hairlines here and there that undoubtedly determine the grade. (PCGS# 088494)

941The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$500.00
1899 PCGS MS-62.
The second 9 shows a die scratch within the upper loop reminiscent of an underdigit. Excellent luster dominates both sides, with the obverse left field showing many micro-abrasions.
942The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$625.00
1899 PCGS MS-63 (green label).
Toning douses the upper-right and lower left portions of the obverse with a dash of grapefruit against the predominant medium-gold patina. Even a touch of bluish iridescence highlights the high...
895The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$1,050.00
1899 PCGS MS-63, and a 1907-D PCGS MS-62.
Texture in the obverse left field of the 1899 is just terrific, the late die state yielding lovely satiny luster, and scattered contact marks aren't really all that distracting. The 1907-D garners...
500The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$420.00
1899 PCGS MS-62.
Surface texture is creamy smooth, as if struck from nicely worn dies, and yields luster much unlike the blazing effect normally seen. A fascinating crimson stain on Liberty's neck is reminiscent of a...
1109The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$650.00
1899 AU, and a 1909-D Indian half-eagle XF.
Circulated half-eagles make up this pairing, though neither is heavily worn. Indeed, the 1909-D has claims to AU, though precise "grade" has little impact in valuation at this level. Two coin lot.
1110The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$750.00
1899 PCGS MS-63+.
Rather better than average for MS-63, with fewer abrasions than expected overall. Cartwheel effect on the obverse is not quite as vibrant as on the reverse, but all of the stars are complete.
857The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$1,400.00
1899, 1900, and 1901, all NGC MS-62.
Consecutive half-eagles are graded MS-62 in NGC EdgeView holders. Truth be told, all of these probably barely make the MS-62 grade, but then again, there's hardly any difference in value between...
804The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$700.00
1899 MS-63.
Extensive flowline luster distinguishes this very attractive, satiny half-eagle. The reverse denomination shows faint signs of doubling, likely the result of die erosion. Only a couple of trivial...
1012The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$290.00
1899 NGC MS-62.
Nearly choice luster, with a reed mark in front of Liberty's portrait. High end for MS-62.
1039The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$1,400.00
1899, 1900, and two 1901-S PCGS MS-62 OGH.
Old green-label PCGS holders encapsulate this winsome quartet of gold half eagles. The 1899 enjoys particularly nice originality, with original bronze toning flowing gracefully between the devices. ...
1040The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$700.00
1899 NGC MS-63.
An opulent orange-gold glow radiates from this specimen's satiny surfaces, making this rather common date visually vibrant. The details are magnificently struck, and the contact marks perceived are...
1054The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$280.00
1899 ANACS MS-61.
Closely examining this specimen with a strong glass reveals repunching on the numerals "99." This is further attested on its ANACS label that identifies this interesting feature with Breen number...
985The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$750.00
1899 MS-63.
Extremely bright surfaces, and large areas of the fields are completely mark free. The detail appears fully complete. If the luster were more uniform and prominent, there is no doubt that this coin...
377The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$390.00
1899 PCGS MS-62.
This splendid Half Eagle exhibits a resplendent yellow-orange glow. Trivial ticks and faint scuffs do not detract from its vibrancy. A superbly crisp strike.
378The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$1,275.00
1899 MS-64.
This is one of the more common dates in the series in lower grades, but find one this nice and you have a real find. This coin came from a gentleman that didn't even know he had it. I was appraising...
1108The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$625.00
1899 NGC MS-63.
Bright surfaces that are flowing with an abundance of luster. The marks are just barely enough to prevent the MS-64 grade, but many would consider it PQ as a MS-63. It is housed in an older style...
