Lot Title:

1873 CLOSED 3. NGC PF-66+.
|
Description:
|
A resounding, superior GEM, this fantastic proof shield nickel gleams with chromelike brilliance, with the entire coin unaffected by even the slightest hint of toning. NGC did not provide a "cameo" designation, but close examination readily shows attractive contrast on both sides, in all areas, except perhaps a few of isolated recesses within the more intricate areas of detail. Speaking of detail, the strike is just as sharp as one expects even for an early proof nickel, with very little planchet granularity to detract. A nice coin, with nice cameo whether or not the slab label indicates so. (PCGS# 003827)

Devices are sharply impressed everywhere, including the "1" in the date, which is nicely repunched. Glittering surfaces are not quite deeply reflective, yet still offer pleasing contrast with... |
