(About The Images)
1865 Pattern Obv. Die. NGC PF-65 (no line). 1865 Pattern Obv. Die. NGC PF-65 (no line).
Lot Title: 1865 Pattern Obv. Die. NGC PF-65 (no line).
Description: The proof 1865 3-cent nickel stands on its own merits as a highly desirable coin from multiple perspectives. Mintage of approximately 500 pieces makes it the key to the proof series, modestly challenged only by the 1877 (which benefits from added value as a proof-only date). NGC population statistics affirm the apparent scarcity, showing 57 graded PF-65, but only 15 in higher grade. One can only speculate on how many have been lost to the ravages of time, and it is also interesting to note the remarkable juxtaposition between very low proof mintage in stark contrast with exceptionally high mintage for circulation strike coins. As the first date in the series, 1865 represents the most coveted of the proof 3-cents, and for type collectors, it also stands in as the most desirable example, since "first of the series" frequently receives preference over later dates. Here is where this particular coin sees separation from the pack. Not only does this NGC PF-65 example represent the inaugural date, but the obverse die used to strike this proof example is the exact same die actually used to strike patterns. That pattern obverse was mated with a regular proof reverse die to create this marvelous die-marriage for proof collectors. Compare the diagnostics to any example of Judd-413, and it is easy to see the same repunched date, as well as three highly distinctive die scratches about equally spaced above STA and extending to the obverse rim. Handsome color further enhances the appeal of this coin, draping the obverse with distinctive silver-peach tones while the reverse exhibits additional classic nickel-white patina. A "cameo" designation probably is out of the question, yet the portrait and reverse devices exhibit very definite frosty texture set against modestly reflective fields. (PCGS# 003761)

1865 NGC MS-65.
A classic type coin, the 1865 3-cent doesn't become overly expensive at the MS-65 grade level. Surfaces feature apricot-beige patina draped over subtle luster, and this is an unusually well-defined...

It would be easy to simply list this as a "lot of 1865 three-cent nickels", but that would be a considerable injustice to Allan Gifford's research and meticulous record keeping skill. Eighteen of...
