Lot Title:
1898 NGC PF-64 Ultra Cameo.
Description:
Mintage: 75. Profuse cameo frost generates spectacular, instant eye-appeal for this amazing proof double-eagle. The NGC grade of "only" PF-64 UCAM seems unfairly conservative at first glance, as this coin possesses the kind of "wow factor" that enthusiasts can only dream about. As always for proof coronet double-eagles, and especially for those struck during the high-quality era of 1898, the details are exceedingly sharp -- almost impossibly full around Liberty's ear. Microscopic die-polish lines show up just behind her earlobe, and crisscross with the vertical lines in the shield. Looking beyond the marvelous presentation, the quest for technical considerations doesn't reveal much on the obverse. Several trivial hairlines spritz through the fields, but are too small to distract much, while a small cluster of fine near-vertical scratches on the cheek may be noted. Turning to the reverse, a conscientious loupe passes over an curious whitish patch beyond the eagle's left (observed) wing. Here is where a minor patch of a hairlines probably play into the grade, though the balance of this side is beautifully preserved. (Available elsewhere: UCAM proof 1898 quarter-eagle, half-eagle, eagle.) (PCGS# 099114)

1898 NGC MS-62.

An excellent orange-gold warmth permeates this Double Eagle's satiny surfaces. One too many ticks precludes it from attaining the next grade level. The design details are quite distinct. |
