Lot Title:
|
1898 NGC PF-65 Star Ultra Cameo.
|
Description:
|
Mintage: 75 The almost-outrageous eye-appeal seems inversely proportional to the number of coins originally struck. While only half the original emission can be expected to have survived, the astounding beauty is about double that of a typical GEM proof. NGC has provided a "star" designation to affirm the utterly inimitable impact of truly absolute yellow-on-black contrast. Catalogers in the past have tended to overuse such terms, but without question, this jaw-dropping half-eagle possesses unconditionally jet-black fields that appear to have no flowline texture whatsoever. This has to have been one of THE first coins off the dies. Pedigree markers run aplenty, including a curly lintmark in front of Liberty's brow, as well as a fascinating planchet flake just above the olive branch clutched in the eagle's left claw. For eye-appeal of this magnitude, one might almost expect an even higher grade by NGC, yet a limited number of sporadic, flickering light hairlines have to be accounted for. Fortunately, the coin has escaped signs of contact, and even the knifelike rims show no discernible ticks whatsoever. One very tiny carbon spot on Liberty's cheek provides the only variation from pure golden coloration. (Available elsewhere: UCAM proof 1898 quarter-eagle, eagle and double-eagle.) (PCGS# 098493)

It didn't have to look so nice - you would have liked it anyway. If you had seen it once or twice, the flashy luster would have made your day. Admittedly, there are abrasions scattered throughout,... |

Abraded surfaces modestly inhibit underlying luster, and there are no more marks than expected of MS-62. A spindly peripheral die crack strings together about half the reverse edge lettering. |

Without a doubt, this 1898 half-eagle has the appearance of a fully choice uncirculated coin at arm's length, as both sides are filled with frosty luster and just scant friction grazes. Closer... |

The reverse grades a full point higher than the obverse. All that prevents a Gem grade is a trio of handling marks below Liberty’s chin, and a couple of pecks below her hairbun. |

This specimen exhibits gleaming gold surfaces with a light sprinkle of minuscule marks. The design element details are very crisp and distinct. |
