Lot Title:
1868 J-633 nickel. NGC MS-65 Ultra Cameo CAC.
Description:
The Pollack reference gives Judd-633 (Pollack--705) a "very rare" R.6 rating, but recent wisdom suggests it is of R.5 rarity, though the pattern 5-cent does not appear in auction even as often as that might imply. Here is a spectacular example, labeled PF-65 UCAM by NGC, and effortlessly worthy of the lofty grade. Gorgeous, gleaming black-on-white contrast instantly affirms the format designation, while the surfaces display no semblance of toning, and naught but a few trivial hairlines traversing the obverse fields upper-left to lower-right. The best pedigree marker will be seen as a small, oblong chip in the denticles beneath the date, and the planchet displays occasional splashes of the slightly spongy texture often seen on these briefly run nickel patterns. (PCGS# 060851)
