Lot Title:

1839 9 over 6, Pl Cord (N-1, R.3+) PCGS VF-30 (green label) CAC.
Description:
The die-crack extending directly left from Liberty's nose indicates die-state "b", as the crack behind the head has not yet developed. Flowline luster remains visible near the margins, particularly on the reverse, which appears to actually possess some cartwheel effect under a bright lamp. Part of the reason for strong collector interest in the 1839/6 stems from the fact that it truly is an overdate, and not the result of a corrected upside-down digit. The 1836 portrait was, of course, no longer used in 1839, affirming this fact. The surfaces of this sienna and leather-brown example display scattered contact marks that fall well within the reach of a middle-grade, with no singular mark even remotely distracting. A small depression between "RI" on the reverse certainly seems to be as-struck. (PCGS# 001756)

1839 (N-1) 9 over 6, Pl Cords. VG.
Remarkably free from distraction, only an extremely slight rim bump at 2:00 and a couple of tiny ticks on either side of S1 bear mentioning. Perfect caramel-brown, with sharpness of VG-8. |
