Lot Title:
Complete collection of Liberty Head nickels in a Whitman 9407 album.
Description:
1912-S is not included. 1885 has Fair details, but part of the obverse is draped in curious glue residue, and 1886 is an unexpectedly strong G-4+. Several coins have strong LIBERTY on the headband, including 1888 and 1891, but these are counterbalanced by other low grade dates, with glue residue making a recurring appearance here and there. 1912 is in a strong upper AU grade. The consignor made an interesting statement that his grandfather assembled the set at least thirty-five years ago, but it wasn't discovered until much later that the "1912-S" had an added mintmark. That coin is not available, of course, but this situation certainly underscores the importance of obtaining coins from a trustworthy source.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
