1803 (LM-3, R.3) Large 8 (misattributed on label). PCGS XF-45.
Description:
Misattributed by PCGS as "Small 8". Three die-marriages are known for 1803, with two of them showing a "large 8" in the date, including this LM-3, which is the most available. The "8" appears to be the creation of two small letters "o" stacked one atop the other, contributing to the charming, delightful appeal of such an early Federal issue. By comparison to most examples that exhibit any of a vast array of problems, the surfaces for this coin are amazingly free from problems, with no nagging hairlines, pits or gouges to detract. Indeed, the only signs of contact include a minor circulation mark on Liberty's shoulder, and one tiny tick perched atop the shield. What a pleasure to be able to enjoy such an old, diminutive coin of this caliber! Appealing cornflower-grey patina infuses the entire coin with meaningful character, and avoids the distraction of stains or spots. Needless to say, at the sharpness level of XF-45, Liberty's hair is distinguished by individually separated strands, and the shield features absolutely complete lines. (PCGS# 004269)
