Lot Title:
1888-S PCGS MS-63.
Description:
1888-S has the odd distinction of being one of the commonest double-eagles lower grades, but draws a premium at the MS-63 level and higher. Indeed, it is flat out expensive in MS-64 and above, indicating the present MS-63 as a "sweet spot". A single goober attached to Liberty's chin is the only distraction noted for this example, with no other spots or contact marks worthy of mention. The strike is clean and sharp, missing only the central details in a couple of obverse stars. Reflecting the aforementioned jump in value, PCGS has graded 183 as MS-63, but only 30 higher.
