Lot Title:
1913-S PCGS MS-62.
Description:
Mustard-yellow coloration typical of gold from the San Francisco mint of the era makes its presence felt immediately, as the low-contrast appearance features that hue exclusively. Unusual for the type, surfaces bear rustic texture that differs from the usual satiny look. It may not be obvious upon initial inspection just why the coin could not grade higher, as there are only minimal abrasions on the cheek, and a number of very tiny deposits of die grease remain scattered across both sides to ensure a high degree of original surface quality. Apparently, a singular scrape across the eagle's tail area bars upgrade. An intriguing lengthy planchet fissure follows the obverse lower left rim and can easily be mistaken as a die crack at first glance. As a scarce date in the series (from an initial mintage of 66,000), PCGS has graded 49 in MS-62, and 37 higher. (PCGS# 008874)

Light haze may be seen on each side, and actually benefits the appearance slightly by downplaying minor abrasions in the field. There is very little actual rub from circulation, but an AU grade... |

Although a somewhat tougher date in the series in grades of AU-50 and higher (and downright rare in high grades), the 1913-S Indian eagle brings hardly any premium below that threshold, making it an... |

One of a handful of key dates in the series, with an escalation in value that increases rapidly above the “XF” level. Though some time in circulation has taken its toll on the coin’s original mint... |
