The obverse portrait is delicately textured, and that might normally lead to a cameo appearance, but both sides are widely peppered by very tiny contact marks, tending to downplay any possible contrast. It isn't rare, but 1896-S commands about a 10% premium over really common dates in AU-58. (PCGS# 008736)
