(About The Images)
Buffalo nickel collection in a vintage Whitman 9408 album. Buffalo nickel collection in a vintage Whitman 9408 album.
Lot Title: Buffalo nickel collection in a vintage Whitman 9408 album.
Description: No 1918/7-D is present, but the rest of the album is populated by incredibly well matched coins. The consignor presents mintmarked coins with reverse facing upward, and that permits immediate determination of horn detail. The good news is that to a stunning level, every single coins displays a strong horn, with most of them full, though some of the toughest issues only display 3/4 of a horn, typical of a VF grade. Not even one single coin has any obvious signs of cleaning or other problem, with classic pewter-grey patina dominating the overall look. There are many highlights, the best listed as follows: 1913-D type-2 (full horn), 1913-S type-2 (7/8 horn), 1914-D (full horn), 1915-D (3/4 horn), 1915-S (7/8 horn), 1916-S (full horn), 1917-D (3/4 horn), 1917-S (7/8 horn), 1918-D (3/4 horn), 1918-S (7/8 horn), 1919-D (7/8 horn), 1919-S (3/4 horn), 1920-D (3/4 horn), 1920-S (3/4 horn), 1921-S (3/4 horn and way above average), 1923-S (3/4 horn), 1924-S (2/3 horn), 1925-D (full horn), 1925-S (3/4 horn), 1926-S (2/3 horn but there is a scrape on the horn tip), and 1937-D three-legged buffalo (3/4 horn, ex-PCGS VF-30, verified as ex-Scotsman 10/20/2006: 987). Given that grading services will typically offer at least a VF-30 grade for coins with 3/4 horn, and XF-40 for coins with 7/8 horn, it should be obvious that there is mammoth certification potential offered. Interestingly, the collection carefully avoids coins of very high grade, with even the easiest, most common issues still represented by strong XF examples.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
