Lot Title:
1797 LM-2, V-4, R-4, 16 Stars VF-20.
Description:
Perhaps lightly cleaned in the past, this is a very elusive type. When they are encountered, the majority seen will show some damage. This particular example is contrary to the vast number extant that exhibit extensive wear. Characteristically, there are heavy clash markings with softly struck central devices. Diagnostically, it depicts the usual die state, showing die cracks from the rim through the lower two points of the eighth star on the obverse and from the rim through the "E" of UNITED on the reverse. Prior to being struck, an interesting trapezoidal lamination occurred on the reverse at the area of the second "S" of STATES with this letter appearing beneath this metal split. A few thin scratches are noted on the Eagle. Attractively toned with an antique silver aspect that is enriched along the obverse periphery with russet-gold
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
