(About The Images)
1854-D PCGS AU-55. 1854-D PCGS AU-55.
Lot Title: 1854-D PCGS AU-55.
Description: Ignoring the unique 1870-S, among the circulation strike coins for the three-dollar gold series, 1854-D is far and away the key in any grade, with even the closest challengers being worth only a fraction of its value by comparison. In addition, this inaugural Dahlonega issue is a condition rarity, with PCGS statistics showing 19 graded AU-55, and 12 higher. For that matter, PCGS has certified just 4(!) in mint-state, and NGC only 9, and that automatically places added collector emphasis on any nicer AU example that comes to market.

And what a nice AU-55 this is! As is almost always the case for 1854-D, soft dentilation outlines the upper two-thirds of the obverse rim, and the reverse has similar soft characteristics throughout its upper two-thirds as well, although both sides do have attractive interior definition. Excluding the light wear expected of the grade, the hair strands in Liberty's tresses are strong and continuous, and most of the leaf detail peeks through the outer wreath areas. Best of all, there are virtually none of the contact marks or annoying digs that often appear on branch-mint gold. As a matter of fact, the lemon-gold surfaces are refreshingly free from any distraction, with some minor scuffling in front of Liberty's temple the closest thing to a complaint as there is on the obverse. A couple of trivial tiny pokes next to the date amount to nothing. Concluding this picture of a gorgeous gem AU, the fields manifest a considerable portion of their original luster, gleaming with aplomb that is more often seen on Philadelphia coins. (PCGS# 007970)
