Lot Title:
1879-O NGC XF-40.
Description:
1879-O serves two meaningful collecting categories at once. For date collectors, it is an exceptionally scarce issue in the double-eagle series, easily within the top ten keys for the Coronet coins, with survivors limited to an original mintage of 2,325 pieces (which was second lowest for the entire series, just ahead of 1856-O). For type collectors, 1879-O represents the only "with motto" (type-3) double-eagle struck in New Orleans, and for that matter, represents the final double-eagle emission from that mint. Thus, demand is strong from multiple directions for any unimpaired example, and between the two major grading services, fewer than 134 individual examples have been certified in ALL grades. Only a twinge of luster still persists between the stars on the obverse, although a remnant of cartwheel effect nonetheless can still be seen on the reverse. Still, the central portion of Liberty's portrait is rather flat, and the eagle's wings have lost sharpness near the centers as well, suggesting that the coin could be a little charitably assessed at XF-40. The only noticeable blemish is a tiny rim tick at precisely 12:00 of the obverse, though of course, tiny circulation marks can be seen under magnification. Surfaces are reasonably original, a little lacking in luster as noted, but accentuated with pleasing mustard-grey patina atop the devices. (PCGS# 008990)
