1873 J-1281. PCGS PF-64 (green label). 1873 J-1281. PCGS PF-64 (green label).
Lot Title: 1873 J-1281. PCGS PF-64 (green label).
Description: Joseph Alexis Bailly emigrated from France and settled in Philadelphia in 1850, establishing a career as a well-known sculptor, with many of his works seen throughout the historic city. His best known and most visible creation was the George Washington statue that used to stand in front of Independence Hall (now replaced by a bronze replica, the original currently on display in City Hall). The Philadelphia Mint commissioned Bailly to design pattern dies for the Trade dollar during the early 1870s, and Bailly is believed to have created at least three designs, although he did not sign any of the dies. His patterns have a distinctive appearance, but seem to have been influenced by the work of Christian Gobrecht, particularly his Seated Liberty design for Judd-1293, which shares a reverse similar to this Judd-1281. Curiously, neither side proclaims LIBERTY as seen on most coins and patterns, including Bailly's own Judd-1281. Liberty's portrait has no eponymous headband, but all the other requisite legends are there, including the statement of silver fineness: "420 GRAINS. 900 FINE."

The strike is incomplete on the reverse, as always seen, with the eagle's central feathers showing indistinct feathers, though the obverse is better defined. Aluminum-beige patina bathes the entire coin, deepening slightly on the rims, but in no way is the strong cameo contrast diminished. This being in a green-label holder, PCGS may not have been designating cameo proofs at the time, but there is no doubt that this specimen deserves such accolades. The fields actually show fewer hairlines than usual for the PF-64 grade level, but the chin has a couple of contact marks, and a couple of superficial scratches penetrate Liberty's hair. The linear depression visible on the shield is the result of a strikethrough. A fascinating and powerful pattern coin that most likely should be upgraded with the "cameo" designation. (PCGS# 061566)
