Lot Title:
Thirty 1931-S VF to AU.
Description:
Certainly on a percentage basis, 1931-S commands a huge premium over common dates within the Buffalo nickel series. At G-4, a '31-S is worth 2000% the value of the cheapest coins, in VF-20, it's about 1500%, and at the AU level, when common dates start to become a little challenging, we are still looking at 700%. Here is an interesting group of only 1931-S examples that grade between VF and AU, which is to say that every single example has at minimum 7/8 of the horn detail (though realistically, most actually have a bold, full horn). A couple of pieces appear to be dipped or marginally cleaned, but without doubt, most would consider these to be generally premium quality, no-problem nickels. Cataloger's note: two other lots in today's sale of 1931-S Lincoln cents, submitted by the same consignor, would be ideal companions to this grouping. Thirty coin lot. (PCGS# 003971)
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

Incandescent tones of blue and violet really give this special Buffalo Nickel a pleasing look. Coins not nearly as nice as this example have been observed in MS-66 holders. This coin is housed in an... |
