(About The Images)
1872 (P02, plate coin) PCGS PF-65. 1872 (P02, plate coin) PCGS PF-65.
Lot Title: 1872 (P02, plate coin) PCGS PF-65.
Description: 1872 P02, Plate coin, Breen 2428. Breen's number distinguishes the nicely repunched 72 in the date. This is an interesting GEM that exhibits yellow-tan patina and some deficiency of strike. Liberty's cheek displays pre-production depressions, and the left Roman numeral is not quite fully impressed. (PCGS# 003768)

528The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$625.00
1862, 1872, 1874, and 1881, as described.
Mike Wrinkle Collection. A quartet of 3-cent coins includes three in nickel. They are listed as: 1872 (MS-63, tasteful sunrise-gold patina), 1874 (MS-63, lovely vintage surfaces), and 1881 (MS-62,...
328The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$475.00
1872 PCGS PF-65.
Nice contrast earns some accolades, but PCGS did not see enough out of this proof to warrant a "cameo" designation. Still, the GEM quality is all there, including a lucid strike and delicately toned,...
313The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$700.00
1872 NGC MS-65.
Perfect iron-grey patina couldn't be nicer for a 3-cent nickel of this vintage, and excellent sharpness keeps the details interesting. Numerous tiny carbon spots pepper each side, but are apparently...
961The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$200.00
1872 (P02, planchet flaw) PCI PF-64.
An extremely difficult coin to evaluate, as PCI attributes this coin as a proof, and Allan Gifford's die attribution agrees. That being said, it is unheard of that the mint would have permitted a...
962The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$675.00
1872 NGC PF-65 CAMEO.
Pristine at arm's length and bright, with icy cameo contrast and gleaming white fields. Close inspection finds a squiggly die scratch at Liberty's nose and several strong strike throughs on the left...
349The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$575.00
1872 NGC PF-65.
Obverse contrast promptly suggests a "cameo" designation, though NGC did not provide one, perhaps because the reverse does not quite meet the standard for such. Nonetheless, the effect is attractive,...
410The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$330.00
1872 PCGS PF-64.
Glistening Proof surfaces with a whisper of rose highlights. The strike is bold with mirrored fields having an excellent Gem aspect.
