Lot Title:
1818 (B-2, R.4) STATESOF. NGC AU-58.
Description:
The reverse is rotated about an eighth of a turn, which is characteristic of the STATESOF reverse (BD-2). Visual impact begins with notice of very sharp details, which is characteristic even of these early gold pieces. Stripes on the left side of the shield are a little weak as always, but every star is boldly struck, and the eagle's plumage finely detailed. A touch of wear appears on his claws. Aside from a couple of small, thin scratches crossing Liberty's cheek, there are no distracting marks or stains, and adjustment marks are far out of the field of vision, on the right obverse rim. Canary-gold surfaces that have been gently cleaned, as can be seen by numerous wispy hairlines in the obverse fields, but this is expected as virtually no early gold has escaped this minor infraction.
