(About The Images)
1819 (B-3) terminal die-state. NGC MS-63. 1819 (B-3) terminal die-state. NGC MS-63.
Lot Title: 1819 (B-3) terminal die-state. NGC MS-63.
Description: B-3 is the most common die-marriage for 1819, but several advanced die cracks add plenty of visual interest, and even suggest that this is the terminal die-state. One crack wanders from between "18", up through the bust and into the obverse left field, and another connects star 11 to Liberty's hair. On the reverse, a crack begins at the rim and crosses the "5", and actually extends very nearly up to the shield. Your cataloger has not seen a more advanced die-state. On top of all this, NGC's grade of MS-63 is a lofty assignment for such representatives of the large-planchet quarters series, with about a dozen certified in higher grade. The luster is amazingly active for a coin of this type, augmented by crunchy tobacco-gold toning that clusters into the rims and occasionally spills into the reverse fields. "Common" B-3 may be, but this eye-appeal for this choice example is hardly mundane! Sharpness is exceptional for a coin struck off old dies, and all the stars features fully defined details. 1819 Small 9 (Browning-3, R.1). AU/lightly cleaned.
Common die-marriage B-3 is popular because it features interesting doubling of the reverse denomination, with both the "2" and "5" clearly repunched over errantly placed digits. This is a pleasing...
307The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$875.00
1819 (B-3) XF.
The consignor had this misattributed as the rare B-4, when in fact the correct attribution is B-3, the most common die-marriage for 1819. Confusion is understandable since they share the same...
