Lot Title:

1799 Stars 8x5 (B-23, BB-159, R.4). PCGS Genuine.
|
Description:
|
The 8x5 star configuration is unique to the obverse die for B-23, and even though many coins were struck off the die-marriage and still exist today, the variety is popular due to inclusion in the RedBook. Thus a premium is attached to any example, even one with alleged "problems". PCGS denotes Genuine-92 in this case, which is intended to indicate "cleaning", and not much argument need be given. The surfaces are virtually devoid of "dirt", and patina has been somewhat eroded away from a liquid agent, as can be deduced by the way pale segments of the fields stand out from more natural background color. However, the cleaning does not appear to have been abrasive in nature, and aside from this deficiency, there are no marks or blemishes noticeable without a loupe. Destined for inclusion in an album where time can help to heal old wounds, and begin to restore a more original appearance.

Outstanding visual appeal is provided by an intriguing mixture of indigo, teal and slate-blue patina overlaid by peach-grey devices, a toning pattern that holds true on both sides. Struck slightly... |
