(About The Images)
1878-S PCGS MS-65. 1878-S PCGS MS-65.
Lot Title: 1878-S PCGS MS-65.
Description: 1878-S is one of the finest struck issues in the Morgan dollar series, and this gem example, graded MS-65 by PCGS, is 99.5% fully struck, with the hair strands flowing above the ear completely separated. The presence of roller marks not effaced by the dies is the only evidence that the strike was not precisely 100% full. Off-white surfaces display substantial semi-prooflike character on the obverse, and a fully lustrous reverse, and this could readily be deemed a premium-quality coin for the grade.
Low Estimate: $170.00
High Estimate: $200.00
Lot Status: Bidding has been closed for this lot.

851The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$650.00
1878-S NGC MS-62, 1885-CC, and an 1891, all NGC MS-62.
Dispensing quickly with the lesser valued pieces, 1878-S looks like it could be placed very easily into an MS-63 holder, with slightly prooflike surfaces that exemplify the eye-appeal, and 1891...
962The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$750.00
1878-S and 1879-S, both NGC MS-66.
1878-S has received a CAC sticker that confirms the obvious high quality for the MS-66 grade, with eye-appeal benefitting from slightly prooflike character. The cheek is as clean and cotton-fresh as...
684The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$450.00
1878-S NGC MS-65, and an 1879-S PCGS MS-66.
The obverse of 1878-S hints at cameo presence, but both sides overall feature strong satin luster and amazing white brilliance. This is a wonderfully struck GEM, exhibit a few minor planchet...
829The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$475.00
1878-S PCGS MS-64 (green label), and an 1882 PCGS MS-64+. Both...
An arcing palette of gorgeous sea-green, turquoise, sunset-gold and brilliant amber-yellow tone drapes Liberty's portrait on the 1878-S, while the reverse is stark blast-white, implying an end-of-roll...
830The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$320.00
1878-S NGC MS-65.
The wild and crazy color is highly reminiscent of end-of-roll tone. Still, it seems unlikely that this coin was found at the end of a roll since actually both sides display the amazing hues, and most...
630The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$1,125.00
Twenty 1878-S uncirculated Morgan dollars.
Quick scanning of various VAM pickup points suggests that there are several varieties, and since the edges don't match up, one can assume this is a put-together roll. Average grade is probably MS-63...
593The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$825.00
1878-S and eleven additional NGC certified Morgan silver dollars. Unc.
An even dozen Morgan dollars reside in no-line NGC holders, several with the embossed reverse, and some noteworthy issues are included. Every coin features at least some rim tone, and they are...
594The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$290.00
1878-S PCGS MS-65.
A spectrum of vivid rainbow color expands into a beautiful crescent along the left side of the reverse, and spills onto the lower edge of the obverse with a splash of pale lemon-yellow. Though not...
645The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$800.00
Tube of 1878-S Morgan dollars
Most likely an assembled roll, as these vary a bit in surface quality. These grade MS-60 and better, with a few noticeably semi-prooflike examples adding a bit of extra value to the lot.
646The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$330.00
1878-S and 1879-S PCGS MS-65 Morgan dollars
A pair of Morgan dollars in "old green holders". The 1878-S bears a mild yellowish cast that is particularly noticeable in comparison to the 1879-S, which is exceedingly bright and white.
647The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$90.00
1878-S Morgan dollar, SEGS MS-66
Your cataloger is in sharp disagreement with the grade indicated, and believes a more realistic assessment to be: "MS-60 details, altered surfaces". It appears as if Liberty's cheek has been altered...
714The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$575.00
1878-S PCI MS-67 and 1881-S ICG MS-67.
Both Morgan dollars in this lot are toned. An 1878-S has green obverse iridescence and a mostly white reverse, and PCI has graded it MS-67. While the reverse actually does coincide with that grade,...
701The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$1,100.00
Four 1878-S PCGS MS-65.
An amazing foursome constitutes this visually delightful assortment from the first year of issue. Each is a Gem with regard to the number and location of contact ticks, as well as each specimen's...
702The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$270.00
1878-S PCGS MS-65.
Only minimal contact marks are present in the fields of this prominently struck inaugural San Francisco issue. Satiny luster emanates from glimmering, silver surfaces, and some unobtrusive die...
703The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$4,500.00
1878-S NGC MS-67*.
Only two other specimens have attained this "exceptional eye appeal" certification level from NGC, with none ascribed finer. Diagnostically, it appears to be the VAM-2 variety for this date, with a...
760The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$210.00
1878-S NGC MS-65.
Fully lustrous with an appealing shimmering silver aspect. The lack of marks are consistent with the grade, and the extremely strong strike resulted in every detail showing distinctly.
604The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$950.00
Original Roll of 1878-S MS-63/MS-64+.
What a gem roll of Morgan Dollars we have here. The end coins are rainbow toned beyond belief, while the middle coins are blast white. They all have frosty devices and are super clean.
605The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$975.00
1878-S NGC MS-66.
Rich, electric rainbow toning blankets much of the obverse surfaces, and soft golden toning flows around the peripheries of the reverse. This coin is flashy and lustrous -- not to mention...
606The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$500.00
1878-S NGC MS-66.
The obverse of this Morgan Dollar is absolutely wonderful. Prooflike fields, frosty devices, and minimal marks. What more can you ask for? I know! How about for the reverse to be as prooflike as...
796The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$390.00
1878-S SEGS MS-65 DMPL.
Highly reflective fields paired with frosty white devices and a bit of rainbow peripheral toning give this coin a PQ look that is hard to turn down. MS-65 may be a little lofty, but the coin is...
714The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$575.00
1878-S SEGS MS-65 DMPL.
After some help from one of NGC's wonderful customer service representatives, I found out this coin came from an NGC MS-65 PL holder. SEGS has graded it MS-65 DMPL. The coin, honestly, could go...
715The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$0.00
1878-S PCGS MS-65.
Semi-prooflike fields and frosty devices are testament to this coin's superior strike. There is a breath of golden toning on the denticles.
716The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$0.00
1878-S PCGS MS-65.
A marvelous Morgan Dollar with semi-prooflike fields and frosty white devices. There are very few marks and a ton of luster.
