Lot Title:

1839-O NGC AU Details/improperly cleaned.
Description:
The value of this 1839-O half-dollar undoubtedly lies in a very powerful strike that has brought up practically every possible detail. All of the strands of hair, and every segment in the eagle's talons are fully sculpted, and the level of preservation actually seems very close to MS-60. "Improperly Cleaned" as disclaimed by NGC may be the least of a few negative factors, since it seems to have been the final injustice to have occurred. The reverse displays a corroded area at UNITED STA, and the cleaning may have been intended to lessen it's visual impact. Further, several careless short scratches are noted at HALF DOL and at the peak of Liberty's cap. The mintmark is nicely repunched south.
