(About The Images)
1797 Lettered Edge, struck over Large cent (C-3b, R.4). VF/choice color. 1797 Lettered Edge, struck over Large cent (C-3b, R.4). VF/choice color.
Lot Title: 1797 Lettered Edge, struck over Large cent (C-3b, R.4). VF/choice color.
Description: Lettered edge, low portrait crowding date and three leaves below "ME" attribute as C-3b. The detail of the under type large-cent is incredibly strong, and Breen was led to exclaim that maybe some of these overstruck coins received impressions from large cent dies after the half-cents were struck! Of course, that is not a sensible scenario, and a more likely explanation is that defective large-cents, perhaps those struck far off-center, were cut down to host these 1797 half-cents. This example is simply beautiful, featuring perfect chocolate-brown color with smooth planchet quality that suffers no aberrations other than manufacturing inconsistency caused by the host coin's existing strike. The date is exceedingly sharp, as is the text denomination on the reverse. Several old scratches can be seen on Liberty's portrait, but are toned to the same color as the rest of the coin and cause little distraction. "Coolness" factor is very high given the extremely bold remnant of the edge of the large-cent host, with AME blatantly visible at the obverse upper-left. Very-fine or so without a doubt and certainly one of the most valuable half-cents in today's magnificent run.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
