(About The Images)
Fifty Flying Eagle cents. Fifty Flying Eagle cents.
Lot Title: Fifty Flying Eagle cents.
Description: A fact seldom contemplated by numismatists is that a roll of copper-nickel cents is somewhat longer than that of modern cents because the earlier pieces were individually somewhat thicker. Here is the equivalent of one complete roll of Flying Eagle cents. These are only in the G to VG range with a few problems here and there, but it is neat to see what fifty cents in base coinage would have looked like at the middle of the nineteenth century. Fifty coin lot.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

Low Estimate: $600.00
High Estimate: $750.00

296The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$525.00
1857 NGC MS-62.
Deep, vintage burnt-sienna patina drifts across unexpectedly lustrous surfaces, and offers much the look of a red-brown bronze cent. The appearance pretty much looks choice, making MS-62 seem like a...
297The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$1,650.00
1857 PCGS MS-64.
FMG Set. Remarkably bright and blazing with full luster, this cent has scarcely changed since the day it dropped off of pre-Civil War dies. Both sides display exquisite definition for the grade,...
321The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$390.00
Twenty Flying Eagle cents.
New World Estate. These appear to be generally problem-free examples, albeit with signs of minor corrosion or just plain grungy dirt seen here and there. The best pieces seem to grade VF, but at...
227The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$340.00
Nine Flying Eagle cents, as described.
Individual grades are not offered, so suffice it to say that these should fall safely within Fine to XF. 1857 varieties include a Snow-2 "type of '56", a Snow-4 DDO, and a Snow-10. Six 1858...
226The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$2,900.00
1857 PCGS MS-65.
Spectacular luster jumps off the fields of this very popular type coin, emanating from gorgeous, problem-free salmon-gold surfaces. The twirling effect cartwheels with multiple spokes over strong...
217The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$390.00
Nine Flying Eagle cent varieties.
Details range from Fine to XF, with concentration in the VF range, and only a couple coins or so have any notable surface issues. Miscellaneous varieties are included, several attributed by Snow...
219The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$575.00
1857 MS-63 details/questionable color.
Perhaps modestly wiped at some point, the fields reveal wispy hairlines under close scrutiny, though their effect is mitigated by the presence of rather attractive sky-blue and rose-magenta toning. ...
360The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$850.00
1857 AU, 1858 small letters VF, and an 1859 Indian-head cent BU.
Much nicer quality is apparent with this trio of early small cents. A case could be made that the 1857 is an UNC coin since there is no actual wear apparent, but a number of small contact marks imply...
361The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$625.00
1857 MS-62.
Most observers would deem the quality worthy of "choice" consideration, given the nice luster, sharp strike and lack of abrasions. Occasional light grey carbon flecks are scattered across the...
232The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$425.00
Collection of eleven small cent type coins in a Capital Plastics...
A nifty little selection of small-cents dated 1857, 1863, 1909 IHC, 1909 Lincoln, 1909-VDB, 1943-S, 1945-S, 1955-S, 1960 small date, 1960 and 1965. The first two coins appear to be mildly cleaned AU...
233The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$100.00
1857 Obv. Die Clash with 50C, FS-402, Snow-9 (FS-003). PCGS VF-30.
The impact of an unlikely meeting between a small cent die with that of a half-dollar resulted in the fascinating Snow-9 multi-denomination clashed die. While clash marks appear throughout the...
234The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$2,400.00
1857 NGC MS-65.
An interesting problem with centering has caused two congruent rims to be present at the upper obverse, while the lower edge appears to have only a sliver of rim visible. The reverse is normally...
190The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$370.00
1857 PCGS MS-62.
Potent luster cycles rapidly through the fields as this coin is observed under proper lighting, and invites further investigation into what appears at first to be a conservative grade. Putting a...
126The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$230.00
1857 PCGS Genuine.
Great skill was employed in recoloring the surface to appear like that of an original uncirculated coin, but close examination discovers some lightened areas -- evidence that spots have been removed,...
127The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$2,600.00
1857 NGC MS-65.
Light honey-bronze patina endows this sharp flying eagle cent with an attractive, vintage appearance and reveals uninhibited cartwheel luster. The majority of these "white cents" were weakly struck,...
455The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$270.00
1857 PCGS Genuine.
Cleverly recolored so as to appear like an original uncirculated coin, but close examination reveals that some spots have been removed, and there is a pair of scratches above the eagle's tail, one of...
456The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$400.00
1857 Obv and Rev Struck Thru NGC MS-63.
The Flying Eagle cent series certainly saw its share of shortcomings in strike quality, but the coin at hand takes those problems one step further, having been struck with grease filled dies. Merely...
457The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$850.00
1857 NGC MS-64.
Indifferent strike quality has produced some indistinct details, particularly at the end of the eagle's tail feathers. Pleasing indigo accents are widely distributed across each side.
515The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$775.00
1857 MS-62.
Consideration could be given for providing a grade of fully "choice" MS-63, as the luster, strike and lack of abrasions make a case for that grade. Occasional flecks of carbon can be seen on the...
516The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$585.00
1857 NGC MS-63.
Planchet anomalies add interesting character, including a linear lamination well below the eagle's neck, and a spindly lamination extending from the reverse rim at 9:00 to the "C" of CENT. Marvelous...
206The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$1,050.00
1857 (x2) Flying Eagle plus six additional Indian Head cents.
An assortment of Flying Eagle and Indian Head cents are to be found in this better lot. The cents are cataloged as follows: 1857 Flying Eagle (MS-60, PVC residue), 1857 (AU-55, cleaned, corrosion...
207The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$500.00
1857 "Snow-4" Flying Eagle cent, NGC MS-63.
Sadly, the submitter of this 1857 Flying Eagle cent did not have the coin's attribution of "Snow-4" indicated on the slab, as it is easily one of the splendid Snow varieties for the date, identified...
439The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$1,150.00
1857 Flying Eagle cent, PCGS MS-64
Mellow honey-russet color is thickly layered over the surfaces of this delectable type coin. Therefore, the luster is perhaps a bit muted, but the benefit is a coin of very fine, original quality. ...
259The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$320.00
Two 1857 and an 1858 "small letter" Flying Eagle Cent.
A pair of 1857 Flying Eagle small cents are accompanied by an 1858 in this lot. The first 1857 grades at least XF-45, though the detail implies a higher grade, while the second 1857 grades AU-50, but...
299The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$310.00
1857 XF-40, 1858 Large Letters XF-45, and 1862 AU-50 Flying Eagle and...
A handsome trio of small cents that is representative of two major types. Each depicts an original natural aspect. The 1858 and 1862 specimens are enhanced by rose tints.
300The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$850.00
1857 NGC MS-64.
Vibrant luster is accentuated by the appearance of red color similar to a sailor's delight sunset. Except for a light sprinkle of minute toning specks and a few ticks, no visual impairments inhibit...
301The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$1,200.00
1857 DDO, FS-002. NGC MS-64.
Numismatic author Richard Snow states that doubling on the obverse die resulted from counterclockwise rotated hub doubling, and the obverse is attributed to both Snow-3 and Snow-4 (FS-002). (The...
278The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$150.00
Three Flying Eagle Cents.
This nicely matched trio consists of the following dates and their respective approximate grades: 1857 XF-40 reverse rim damage, 1858 Large Letters VF-30, and 1858 Small Letters VF-25.
280The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$625.00
1857 MS-63+.
This is a fresh coin. The quality of manufacturing on this cent is far above average. The impression is finer than is common on Flying Eagles, the wings and breast are fully struck, and the tail...
281The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$875.00
1857 NGC MS-64.
You just don't see these this nice very often. It has rich original mint luster and honey brown color. There is not one distraction on this appealing Flying Indian Cent. If you are looking for one...
282The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$875.00
1857 NGC MS-64.
Attractive originality and a strong strike team up to give this Small Cent a pleasing look. Other than a few toning flecks, there are no distractions to report.
1020The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$340.00
1857 MS-60+.
The surfaces glimmer with a soft russet glow and display a mottling of the same hue. Although apparently cleaned at one time, it retains a handsome aspect. A light sprinkling of ticks, along with...
1021The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$475.00
1857 MS-63+.
Exquisitely toned with a spectacular mix of violet and orange iridescence. A sprinkling of ticks and flecks are noted on its glistening surfaces. A prominently struck issue from this popular series.
324The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$500.00
1857 MS-60+.
A dash of orange iridescence exudes an heirloom aspect to this piece's delicate and lustrous surfaces. A couple minor toning specks are camouflaged by its dusky sunset aspect. The strike is...
325The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$0.00
1857 PCI MS-64.
The obverse displays prooflike fields, a monstrous strike, and has the color of Swiss Miss Hot Cocoa. The reverse is very similar to the obverse, but it is not quite as reflective. There are a few...
326The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$0.00
1857 NGC MS-65.
Such a clean example of a coin that is difficult to find in such a high state of preservation. Powerfully struck and void of the toning flecks that are sometimes seen on Flying Eagles.
