Lot Title:
1840-O AU.
Description:
Reaching back in time, to the early history of the New Orleans mint, Coronet gold struck there in the 1840s seems underappreciated in today's market. 1840-O was the first date for O-mint half-eagles and therefore automatically qualifies as a premier type coin in the series, and this example is struck better than the many that have poor central details. In this case, the curl above Liberty's ear displays much definition, with some softness due simply to wear, while the horizontal shield lines are just a tad weak on the right side. Luster is feeble on both sides, but in part, this is simply due to how New Orleans struck her gold, so an AU-50 grade seems suitable overall.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
