(About The Images)
1795 (O-117, R.4) PCGS F-12. 1795 (O-117, R.4) PCGS F-12.
Lot Title: 1795 (O-117, R.4) PCGS F-12.
Description: The Redbook lists a "two leaf" variety for 1795, and that inclusion is reason enough to ensure popularity among collectors. 1795 O-117 is instantly identified from the obverse by a defect line within the right side of the "Y" in LIBERTY and is a very scarce (R.4) die marriage. This example is further distinguished by exceptionally original surface quality that displays ash-grey patina lying outside the perimeter of the obverse stars, and absolutely perfect pewter-grey patina everywhere else. What appears to be a sintered planchet defect can be seen on the upper left side of the reverse edge, and it is merely a natural byproduct of early mint manufacturing technology. As demanded of the grade, obverse and reverse rims are bold, though some circulation "noise" in the form of tiny digs in the center of the portrait must be noted.

High Estimate: $2,100.00

488The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$775.00
1795 Two Leaves (O-102) Good.
Campania Estate. As something of a "shielded hair" obverse subtype, the tresses display much more detail than expected of G-4, although the balance of the definition shows strong wear, particularly...
489The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$3,300.00
1795/1795 Three Leaves (O-111, R.4+) ANACS F-12.
Ronald Zink Early Type Collection. One of THE most wildly repunched dates in the entire American compendium, a full "1795" shows clearly a half-digit beneath the final punching of the corrected date,...
681The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$775.00
1795 (O-113, R.3) Good/tooled.
New World Estate. The centers of both main devices have been smoothed with a fine-pointed tool, presumably to disguise unwanted graffiti or damage whose extent can no longer be ascertained. The coin...
682The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$425.00
1795 (O-116, R.4) Good details/repaired.
New World Estate. A strong date and generally complete rims will elicit a technical grade of about G-4, although the coin undoubtedly has extensive overall wear. Unfortunately, the center of...
683The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$1,575.00
1795 (O-104) NGC F-12.
The entire surface exhibits the appearance of attractive, original pewter-tan color everywhere, with pleasing honey iridescence emanating widely from the fields. Some small crumbles of light, silvery...
791The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$1,250.00
1795 Small Head (O-128, R.5+) GD-4.
While the Redbook does not call out a "small head" type separately from others, the 1795 O-128 is popular for that motif. We have here a remarkably attractive and unquestionably original example that...
792The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$2,000.00
1795 2 Leaves (O-110, R.4) PCGS F-12.
Smooth, pleasant surface quality shows the effects of strictly honest wear, with scarcely a mark to detract from the gently contrasted two-tone color scheme. A single shallow mark flung above the...
560The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$2,300.00
1795 (O-121, R.4) VF details/obv scratch.
Exceptional detail includes fully delineated strands of hair and virtually an entire complement of the eagle's wing feathers, suggesting the upper reaches of the VF grade. Add to this the delightful...
574The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$900.00
1795 ANACS VG-10 details/scratched.
What appears at first to be a series of scratches along the obverse upper left border is actually the remnant of as-struck adjustment marks, and nothing else seems deserving of the questionable ANACS...
681The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$1,353.00
1795 (O-102, R.4) two leaf. PCGS VG-8.
Detail is almost picture-perfect for VG-8, the grade assigned by PCGS. A bit of weakness along the obverse right rim and reverse left is probably compensated by stronger definition within Liberty's...
682The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$1,600.00
1795 (A over E, O-113a, R.4) PCGS VG-10.
O-113 is very popular for the blundered first vowel in STATES, and this later die-state includes a die crack connecting LIBERTY, as well as some die chips strewn about the last few stars. ...
683The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$2,100.00
1795 (O-110, R.4) NGC F-12.
Fields exhibit an aspect of denim-steel not often seen on well worn flowing-hair half-dollars, since this attractive feature usually resides on coins of higher grade. Because the devices are more...
684The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$7,750.00
1795 (O-110, R.4) NGC XF-40.
Pleasing definition in Liberty's tresses and throughout the eagle's wings verifies the NGC XF-40 grade. Surfaces display a reasonable rendition of original quality, with dusky bronze tone dominating...
458The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$1,850.00
1795 (O-117, R.4) PCGS F-12.
1795 O-117 is a very scarce "two leaves" variety instantly identified by a defect line within the right side of the "Y" in LIBERTY. This example is further distinguished by exceptionally vintage...
683The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$1,350.00
1795/1795 Recut Date, 3 Leaves (O-111, R-3) PCGS Fair-02.
Exceptionally ironic is the PCGS statement on the insert of 1795/1795 "recut date" when in fact, the date has entirely worn away! The vaguest trace of a "5" is all that can be seen. Fortunately,...
684The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$2,100.00
1795 Small Head and Bust (O-126, R-4) PCGS GD-6.
A pleasing, original coin that surprises viewers with the display of velvet-blue album tone, entirely unexpected in this low a grade. Somewhat stronger than the PCGS G-6 assessment, appearing to your...
685The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$1,000.00
1795 (O-109, R.4) ANACS VF-20 Details, repaired - whizzed..
Subjected to unimaginable horrors, it is nigh impossible to proclaim all of the ill treatment suffered by this poor and unassuming early half dollar! The sponge-porous surfaces may have resulted from...
686The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$4,000.00
1795 Small Head and Bust (O-126, R.4) VF/questionable color.
O-126 is given only an R.4 rarity, yet appears on the market less frequently than that would suggest, undoubtedly because of type collectors wanting a "small head" representative. A layer of murky,...
482The Collectors' Auction 2008 on 10/17/2008$1,750.00
1795 Double cut date (O-112, R.4) F-15, reverse rim ticks.
It is fortunate that the mint decided to repunch the date for the obverse die of the O-112, as the original position would have left it in an unsightly position adjacent to the rim. The under-digits,...
566The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$625.00
1795 O-108 Flowing Hair half-dollar, NCS "VG details"
As something of a "shielded hair" variety, the O-108 often seems to display more hair detail than what is implied by the grade. This coin has been thoroughly scrubbed, yet the multiple evels of grey...
508The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$675.00
1795 O-111 R4 “3 leaf”, VF detail, holed, ex-jewelry, net G-4.
This early half-dollar certainly has seen it’s share of abuse, hence our extremely conservative net grade. Rim damage, in conjunction with a hole, lends credence to the theory that this coin was once...
509The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$1,500.00
1795 O-126 R4+ Small Head VG-8.
The portrait is whimsically smaller than that of other die marriages for 1795, resulting in the popular "small head" moniker used by collectors of early half dollars. Unlike some others with this...
510The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$3,200.00
1795/1795 O-112 R5 VF-30.
This example looks surprisingly similar to the plate coin in the Overton book, though of course, it is not that exact coin. Patinated in smoky grey tones, especially about the peripheral areas. ...
539The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$1,050.00
1795 O-109 VG-10.
A difficult type to locate, regardless of grade. It has possibly been retoned and shows a rich blue-pewter around portions of the peripheries. Liberty and the legend remains strong.
540The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$2,900.00
1795 O-110, R-4 VF-25.
A recut date example that shows minimal contact marks for the grade. Appealing pewter surfaces with faint rich russet toning around the peripheries.
541The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$23,500.00
1795 2 Leaves, O-119, R-4. NCS Genuine.
This early half dollar is unhesitatingly diagnosed as O-119. This is because of the extended die bulge observed on its obverse above star 15, and since it is the only 1795 variety that has the lowest...
1104The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$975.00
1795 F-12.
These coins are monstrously tough to find with no major damage. This specimen has smooth even wear with no major distractions. The reverse has two major die cracks that are quite unique.
1105The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$1,950.00
1795 O-113a, R-4. F-15.
This specimen is copiously toned in medium gray that is augmented by nuances of gold. A couple minor grooves are noted between stars 2 and 3. Also, a toned graze is indicated from the "T" of...
1106The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$1,950.00
1795 O-108a, R-4. VF-25.
The classic details depicted on these early issues have always contributed to their popularity. This particular piece's deep charcoal-gray surfaces are enhanced with blushes of faint rose and gold. ...
1345The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$1,100.00
1795 O-110, R-4. F-12.
Pleasing light gray surfaces uniformly blanket this attractive lower grade, two leaves example. Mint induced adjustment marks are seen on the obverse as is a minuscule rim tick at 11:30. The reverse...
1346The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$1,850.00
1795 O-110, R-4 PCGS F-12.
This popular type exhibits a medium gray aspect enhanced by a delicate rose blush. One or two older ticks, and a microscopic pinprick on the Eagle's right wing, are ascribed for accuracy on this...
1347The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$2,400.00
1795 O-108a, R-4 NGC VF-20.
This variety's attractive pale gray surfaces are graced by an exceptionally delicate gold blush. Minimally marked for this grade level with a interesting toning array on the reverse of this handsome...
1348The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$1,725.00
1795 O-117, R-4 VF-25 DAMAGED.
This is a rather scarce variety with the reverse berries divided 9 on the left and 8 on the right, and 4 berries under the Eagle's right wing. This is the only such reverse apportionment for this...
1349The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$3,800.00
1795 O-119, R-4 PCGS VF-35.
The only example from this date with the point of the leaf touching the left base of "I" in UNITED. It displays a noteworthy appearance of tinges of rose blanketing its light gray surfaces. Some...
567The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$850.00
1795 O-113, R-3 VG-10.
A pale silver-gray hue, with a hint of orange-russet blush in the recessed areas, is observed on the surfaces of this popular variety. This variety that is identified by a distinguishing die lump,...
568The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$900.00
1795 2 Leaves O-109 R-4 VG-10.
The distinguishing feature for this specimen's variety attribution is a diminutive die defect line extending from the top inside berry on the right of the wreath opposite the word OF in the...
569The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$3,500.00
1795 O-117, R-6. VF-30.
The surfaces have an appealing smoky gray aspect with a delicate crimson blush. Scarcely worth mentioning are a few scant hairlines in front of Liberty's profile, beneath these hues; seen only when...
