Lot Title:
1907-D AU.
Description:
Though relegated to the ranks of "percent over gold spot" in common grades, 1907-D is given a bit of a premium in better mint-state grades, especially at the MS-63 level, which is an enticing assignment for this piece. Opulent luster shimmers from the obverse fields with velvety softness, and nearly takes on the coveted "tortoise shell" texture that is always so desirable in a large gold coin. Typical screaming luster invigorates the reverse and may actually energize that side alone to the MS-65 (!) level. Grade-limiting factors include a cluster of hairline scrapes on Liberty's forward cheek, highly reminiscent of slide marks, and possibly enough of a factor to reduce overall grade to AU-58. But there is no doubt that a speculator somewhere will see a window of opportunity here, since getting this piece into a better mint-state holder means a very nice return on a "gold content" investment.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
