(About The Images)
1904 PCGS PF-65. 1904 PCGS PF-65.
Lot Title: 1904 PCGS PF-65.
Description: As a business strike, 1904 is one of the most common — possibly THE most common — of issues in the Coronet double eagle series, and the same date is cited by some experts (Garrett, Guth) as being the most available proof date in the series. That being said, from any standpoint, proof Liberty double eagles are rare coins, with mintages believed to be below 100 for any date. Put simply, high quality proof Coronet gold of any denomination, but especially of double eagles, is scarce, underrated, and beautiful; a formidable trifecta for the connoisseur of fine American coins.

Philadelphia was producing very high quality gold in 1904, including numerous business-strike examples that provided prooflike quality of each then-current gold denomination, and ironically, there are some cameo prooflike coins that actually have reflectivity and contrast superior to that of proof coins. Yet the intricate details and stunning presentation of a proof are difficult to surpass, especially with regard to the watery reflectivity that is characteristic of coins struck off polished planchets (planchets intended for commerce are not polished).

PCGS has certified only seven 1904 double eagles at the PF-65 grade level, and none higher, though competing examples have been certified with “cameo” or better contrast at both services. Since this coin was certified before PCGS identified proof coins as being cameo, it didn’t have the opportunity to receive that designation. Should a dealer be the high bidder, he will likely attemp to rectify that situation.

The present coin, housed in a PCGS green label holder, certainly bears out the characteristics of high quality production, with an almost impossibly intricate strike and delightful obverse cameo contrast. The obverse portrait, stars and numerals are all frosted with pleasing satiny texture. As-made roller marks not entirely effaced from the fields may play a part in limiting the technical grade to PF-65, but there are essentially no other detriments. The reverse die may be nearly imperceptibly doubled along the bottom of the letters in UNITED (staff).

1904 PCGS MS-64.
Mere reputation as an exceedingly common issue even in high grade is almost enough to condemn any 1904 double-eagle to conservative grading, and at first glance, this delightful yolk-gold example...
886The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$1,550.00
1904 MS-60.
Dusky grey-gold patina drapes below Liberty's portrait, and then swoops over the upper side of the reverse. Booming luster is characteristic of this familiar issue.
887The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$1,750.00
1904 NGC MS-63.
Slick corn-gold fields contrast mildly with Liberty's portrait, which is a little more pale in hue. Rather clean for the grade, with the most apparent abrasions distributed across Liberty's cheek.
888The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$2,650.00
1904 NGC MS-64.
Absolutely lovely mother-of-pearl luster pervades the fields, and very nearly overcomes the minor detraction of a modestly abraded cheek. A suitable gold type coin.
889The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$2,700.00
1904 NGC MS-64.
As usual for the issue, slight prooflike character can readily be seen, especially on the obverse where Liberty's portrait features light frosty texture contrasting with luminescent fields. Sharply...

843The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$3,200.00
1904 NGC MS-64.
A hint of prooflike character is never unexpected for a gold coin dated 1904, and such is the case here. This is an unusually clean Liberty double-eagle for just the MS-64 grade, but that might be...
1245The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$1,250.00
1904 PCGS MS-62.
