Lot Title:
1795 UNC details/cleaned.
Description:
Taraszka-1 is the most common die marriage for 1795 and features a “13 leaf” reverse, with attribution guided by proximity of the eleventh star to “Y” in LIBERTY. An original mintage of 5,583 pieces for all varieties that year may seem tiny by today’s standards, but surprisingly, that emission was large enough to make this the most available of the very short run of 1795 - 1797. Therefore, this serves well for type purposes, and owning a nicer example does wonders among one’s peers for type-set bragging rights. The bottom line, this is a fabulous type coin for even a serious collector who covets fine quality in early gold as the “cleaned” assessment by NCS is somewhat suspect, which is why the coin has been taken out of the NCS holder and is offered raw. So, the disclaimer means little considering the excellent eye-appeal offered by consistent straw-gold color, surfaces that are completely free from any meaningful defects, and wonderful sharpness from a strike that was remarkably nice considering the mint’s production technology. The eagle’s wings display essentially complete definition, and every one of Liberty’s hair strands is carefully detailed. There are certainly other early gold eagles on the market in higher grade, but there are also many with their unfair share of issues, and a piece like this with hardly any problems at all should have no difficulty finding a proper home (staff).
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
