Lot Title:

1885 NGC PF-65 Ultra Cameo.
|
Description:
|
Ultra Cameo coronet gold coins are among the most beautiful ever produced by the mint, yet the series garners hardly any attention from the collecting public, and gem examples don't get nearly the acknowledgement they deserve. Lack of publicity may simply be the result the scarcity of such coins. There just aren't enough around to stock vending machines, or be hawked on home shopping networks! For 1885, sixty-six proof examples were struck, and perhaps a third of those remain extant today. NGC has put only two of those into PF-65 UCAM holders, with five graded higher. Astounding contrast teases the eye from the exquisite cameo presentation, the kind that yields jet-black fields and luminous bright gold devices when held just so under a lamp. Tilt the coin ever so slightly, and the delicately marbled texture of the fields glimmers into view. This is something worth seeing by folks who are familiar only with the deep, flat mirrors on modern proofs. The texture bends and reflects light in all different directions, yet provides unlimited depth of reflectivity that is a joy to behold. By strict grading standards, technical aspirations are locked into the PF-65 grade by several fragile hairlines in the obverse lower left field, and a tiny black spot beneath the eagle's talons is just visible without a glass. A microscopic crescent-shaped planchet defect beneath the eleventh star will identify this particular jewel for future generations.

1885 PCGS MS-63.

Perfectly well graded at MS-63, surfaces gleam with consistent medium-gold from coast to coast. A couple of trivial hairlines scattering horizontally across the lower left field are too minor to be... |

1885 PCGS MS-63+.

Prodigious luster flows through the fields and empties out between the peripheral devices. PCGS gave this MS-63 a "plus", but thoughts of upgrade might be banished by several small abrasions on... |

1885 and 1907-D, both AU.
|
1885 is tantalizingly close to mint-state, but some hairlines and the faintest touch of wear place an overall grade assessment at AU-50. 1907-D offers a nice combination of butterscotch and dandelion... |

1101 | The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011 | $1,550.00 |
1885 and 1898 NGC MS-63.
|
Uneven strike quality gives the 1885 slightly deficient obverse detail, yet hints of semi-prooflike character, and sharper design elements on the reverse. 1898 displays desirable powder-gold sheen... |

1103 | The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006 | $180.00 |
1885 ANACS AU-50.

This is a "no brainier" AU coin with rolling luster on both the obverse and reverse. |
