(About The Images)
1854 Type 2. PCGS AU-50. 1854 Type 2. PCGS AU-50.
Lot Title: 1854 Type 2. PCGS AU-50.
Description: 1854 is certainly the most common type-2 gold dollar and is a workhorse for type collectors who need only a single example for their collections. Housed in a PCGS rattler holder is this straw-gold AU-50 candidate, filled with luster on both sides and reasonably unabraded for a small coin that has seen light circulation. Although the purpose of redesigning the gold dollar was to enable sharper strike quality, those that suffered defective planchets saw no benefit from the new design, and a low, rough area at the center of the reverse failed to be properly brought up as the dies struck this coin.
Low Estimate: $400.00
High Estimate: $500.00
Lot Status: Bidding has been closed for this lot.
Hammered Price: $500.00

900The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$430.00
1854 Type 2. NGC AU-55.
Only smooth, even delicate wear defines the grade since no detractions exist on either side. Overall color seems a trifle pale, and there are fewer hairlines than usual for the type, suggesting a...
901The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$700.00
1854 Type 2. NGC AU-58.
Plentiful, consistent luster still roams across the entire surfaces, interrupted just barely by imperceptible friction on the highest relief areas. Remarkably free from individual abrasions, and...
1038The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$6,500.00
1854 Type 2. PCGS MS-63.
A considerably tougher coin in MS-63 than MS-62, a paucity of so-certified examples explain why these triple in value at this grade, underscoring the very short supply of type-2 examples struck during...
1055The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$575.00
1854 Type 2. NGC AU-58.
Frosty with pleasing luster and excellent presence. Apparently more original than usual, either side displays a fine layer of olive-gold patina that only adds to the overall appeal. One very fine...
1056The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$900.00
1854 Type 2. ICG MS-61.
Very popular due to the motifs, 1854 type-2 proves to be a great type representative in the series and commands a substantial premium over the more common type-1. The ICG MS-61 grade assuredly...
1057The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/26/2013$2,200.00
1854 Type 2. NGC MS-62 (obverse rusted die).
Numerous raised pimples hide between and above the peripheral lettering of the obverse -- evidence of a rusty die. Thus, potential luster for this type-2 gold dollar may have been limited to begin...
866The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$775.00
1854 Type 2. NGC AU-58.
Always popular for type representation, 1854 may represent the most common type-2 gold dollar, though the extremely limited two-year production run puts heavy collector demand on even this...
867The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$2,300.00
1854 Type 2. NGC MS-62.
Today's auction offers several nice type-2 gold dollar options, this being one that just avoids the big jump in value beyond MS-62. Contact-free medium-gold surfaces show only a few delicate...
776The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$400.00
1854 Type 2. PCGS AU-50.
Minimal luster hides within protected areas of the periphery, saved from the light wear affecting both sides. Butterscotch patina looks just right atop the unmarked surfaces.
777The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$475.00
1854 Type 2. PCGS AU-53.
Subdued satin-honey luster appears to be utterly original, and a delicate layer of greyish patina gathers gently into a few of the peripheral letters on the obverse. On the reverse, the attractive...
988The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$400.00
1854 Type 2. PCGS XF-40.
Plenty more luster than expected for XF-40 emanates from the fields, perhaps encouraging upgrade speculation over the PCGS green-label holder. However, the cost of certification would scarcely be...
768The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$425.00
1854 Type 2. AU.
Enough luster remains to warrant upper AU consideration, but a few too many micro-hairlines designate the grade in favor of AU-50. Type-2 gold dollars continue to be in strong demand, and this would...
770The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$475.00
1854 Type 2. PCGS AU-53.
If tilted at about 90 degrees counterclockwise, a patch of peculiar scratches can be seen zigzagged into the obverse right field, behind Liberty's neck. It is possible that someone effaced an...
771The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$875.00
1854 Type 2. NGC AU-58.
Surfaces offer sumptuous, sweet apricot-gold patina, invigorated by smooth, underlying cartwheel luster and only very faint wear. The strike is a little better executed than that seen on many coveted...
772The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$1,750.00
1854 Type 2. NGC MS-61.
This is a surprisingly nice type-2 gold dollar for such a basic BU grade of MS-61, as assigned by NGC. Both sides display better mint frost than usual, with definition in the hair strands that also...
920The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$875.00
1854 Type 2 w/ die erosion doubling. AU.
A die specialist's dream, this 1854 type-2 gold dollar offers the most extreme level of die erosion ever witnessed by your fearless cataloger -- by a long shot. In fact, is it possible this was...
921The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$575.00
1854 Type 2. NGC AU-55.
Somewhat nicer than the typical type-2 representative, since a lot of luster continues to flow around the fields, particularly on the reverse. Definition is characteristically lacking due to strike...
922The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$850.00
1854 Type 2. AU-58.
The included NGC tag indicates a grade of AU-58 for a type-2 gold dollar, and this olive-yellow 1854 representative offers luster and details suitable to the about-uncirculated grade level. Scant...
923The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$1,500.00
1854 Type 2. NGC MS-60.
As the most underutilized grade in numismatics, it is always a pleasure to see MS-60 judiciously and properly applied, especially to a popular gold coin. 1854 is easily the most desirable...
697The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$525.00
1854 Type 2. PCGS AU-53.
1854 saw the debut of the most difficult type gold dollar, the type-2 "small head", and PCGS has provided a grade of AU-53 for this olive-beige example. Surfaces are very pleasantly clean for the...
698The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$500.00
1854 Type 2. NGC AU-55.
Multiple die-clashes affect the reverse of this type-2 gold dollar, while the obverse die was apparently lapped to remove the clashing. A grey-gold coin that features minimal luster and only slight...
699The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$750.00
1854 Type 2. NGC AU-58.
Clash marks on the obverse behind Liberty's head are even more prominently etched than usual, though some clashing is always expected of a type-2 gold dollar. This 1854 example features rich...
1055The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$450.00
1854 Type 2. AU.
Much luster remains, though an inadequate strike has provided unimpressive detail. Free of distractions, however.
1056The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$700.00
1854 Type 2. AU.
Scarcely worn at all, with mere friction being indicative of the grade. A pleasing corn-yellow type coin.
1057The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$1,150.00
1854 Type 2. AU-55 PL.
Probably semi-prooflike when originally struck, though five points of wear has imparted a few hairlines and diminished reflectivity a little. Minor planchet flakes (as struck) can be seen on each...
852The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$750.00
1854 Type 2. NGC AU-58.
This is a really nice large-diameter gold dollar type coin. Spirited mint luster smolders from beneath robust cinnamon-red patina that drapes across each side, attesting to wonderful, original...
853The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$1,100.00
1854 Type 2. ICG MS-61.
Among the more unusual gold coins in this sale is this 1854 "type 2" gold dollar, graded MS-61 by ICG. Both sides are moderately abraded, but while the reverse has retoned to a mostly consistent...
813The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$825.00
1854 gold dollar, NGC AU-58
Lemon-gold with light handling marks from circulation. A strong die clash appears on the obverse.
920The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$750.00
1854 Type 2. NGC AU-58.
Confirming the circulated status of this Type 2 gold dollar are the moderately abraded fields that display a few shallow scratches under close scrutiny.
921The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$425.00
1854 Type 2. AU-58.
A first-year example of this stylish design type, and one that has an opulent yellow-gold glow. A few scattered surface marks, and one pinch mark on the obverse at 2 o'clock, are the only noted...
922The Midwest Summer Sale 2007 on 07/27/2007$825.00
1854 Type 2. ANACS AU-58 Scratched.
This first year of issue example for this short lived type displays ample luster on its frosty, yellow-gold surfaces. As ascribed, there are some scratches. Also, for accuracy, there is a brighter...
905The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$800.00
1854 Type 2. AU-55.
This is a charming specimen from the first year of issue for this short lived series. These initial pieces were only produced at the Philadelphia Mint. A piece that at first glance indicates a grade...
906The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$925.00
1854 Type 2. NGC AU-58.
A delicate yellow-orange vibrancy emits from this specimen's velvetlike surfaces. Some faint die striations are observed on its subtlety clashed reverse. Devoid of detracting marks or blemishes, and...
907The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$775.00
1854 Type 2. NGC AU-58.
Only the Philadelphia Mint produced the first year of issue for this Small Indian Head design type. Still quite lustrous, it has an orange-gold aspect on its glistening surfaces. There are no...
274The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$260.00
1854 Type 2. XF-40++.
This first year example of this artistic design type has a delicate pale orange aspect. A few stray hairlines are perceived with a glass, but none are prominent on this pleasing-for-the-grade strike.
275The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$3,500.00
1854 Type 2. PCGS MS-62.
This is an example from the first year of issue for this Small Indian Head type design, which was only minted in Philadelphia. It displays exquisite luster that emits from its orange-gold surfaces. ...
981The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$1,000.00
1854 Type 2 NGC AU-58.
One of the more attractive AU examples you are likely to encounter. It is really the ideal AU - bright with only the slightest trace of circulation.
982The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$900.00
1854 Type 2. NGC AU-58.
Glowing yellow-gold jumps from the surfaces of this borderline Unc. Appears completely original. This is a very pretty coin that should command lots of attention, especially this close to full mint...
