Lot Title:

1787 (1860 - 77) Fugio "New Haven Restrike" in copper (Newman 104-FF, R.2, 134.3 grains) VF/bent.
|
Description:
|
It is possible that this is a brass New Haven restrike of the Fugio copper type, as the planchet has a distinctive smell often associated with that alloy. Not being as adamant about numismatic aroma as PCGS, your cataloger does not own a "coin sniffer", but the appearance bears out some consideration as a brass planchet. At any rate, the thin rings on the reverse instantly identify this as one of the coins struck off of recreated dies ca. 1858 - 1860. Convexity of the bent planchet is responsible for VF details on the rings side, but much softer detail on the sundial, with none of the Roman numerals readable.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
