Lot Title:
1920-D PCGS MS-63.
Description:
Something of an "optical delusion", to borrow a phrase from certain fractional currency specialist, distinguishes this interesting 1920-D buffalo nickel, since at arm's length, it has the appearance of a lustrous and attractive coin with typical, original patina and plenty of pristine luster. Magnification reveals a dramatic difference between impressions and reality, however, since it turns out that the entire obverse is peppered with myriad tiny carbon spots, and similar flecks dominate the upper left half of the reverse. Remarkably, these are essentially invisible without a glass, due their individually diminutive nature, and a collector who failed to use a loupe might never know they were there. Needless to say, a visually intriguing coin.
