Lot Title: 1806 (O-110, R.6, early die state) from Upstate New York Cache. XF details/damaged.
Description: The metal detectorists who uncovered a hoard of silver coins "near an old fort site in upstate NY" promoted this find as the "second greatest recovery of bust halves in the United States". While this example comes with a 2x2 insert stating "UPSTATE NY CACHE / AUTHENTIC", coins from the hoard were later sent to NGC/NCS for encapsulation, and were pedigreed to the "Mohawk Valley Hoard". It is the source for this 1806 O-110, which is currently believed to be a very rare (R.6) die marriage.

Most descriptions of competing examples reference a "heavy die crack" extending from Liberty's lips to the rim at 3:00, and that obverse die was used only in O-110, but it is very significant that the same die crack seen here is light, having just begun to form. This is an even earlier die state than that seen on the Overton plate coin, with both coins displaying only one branch in the crack next to the lips. However, all seen examples have characteristic strike weakness near the end of the eagle's right (observed) wing. Although cleaned and exhibiting the characteristic "notch" damage at 12:00, as found on most coins from the hoard, Overton specialists will have no trouble considering such a rare coin for their collections.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
