Lot Title:
1918 NGC MS-65 FB.
Description:
1918 does not immediately come to mind as an elusive date in the Mercury dime series, but by the end of World War I, the new dimes were no longer novel items to the public, and they were infrequently set aside. Per David Lange, a new hub introduced in 1918 (third in three years of production) de-emphasized central sharpness as well, and these factors lead to difficulty in locating really nice gem 1918 dimes with full bands. The present example shimmers with marvelous silver-pearl luster on the obverse, but slightly subdued cartwheel effect on the reverse due to a light veneer of lavender-grey patina. Without doubt, the central cross band is fully split, but minor weakness can be seen in peripheral details next to the rim. Scattered tiny ticks are congruent with the grade.
