Lot Title:
1860 $5 MORMON. NGC VF-20.
Description:
Gold! Discovery of the precious bright yellow metal in the hills of Colorado (or Jefferson Territory, as it was called then) produced the final coins struck by the Mormons from 1859 - 1861. The obverse employs elements of the Deseret Alphabet, newly invented as an attempt at linguistic self-sufficiency by the Mormons, and symbols surround a seated lion above the 1860 date. An eagle hovers above an industrious beehive on the reverse, surrounded by the legend DESERET ASSAY OFFICE PURE GOLD / 5 D. Indeed, alloy for the coins was comprised of .917 fine (22-karat) gold, and the soft coins wore quickly. While very popular among followers of the Mormon faith, the coins failed to circulated outside their domain. Today, they are very highly sought after reminders of the Old West, and are valuable in any grade. That offered here features consistent, even wear on both sides and pale canary-gold color.
