Lot Title:
1877 MS-60/cleaned/grafitti.
Description:
Without a doubt, this looks like a shocking gem at first glance, with utterly clean fields and devices that show no blemishes at all. Confounding such hopefulness, unfortunately, is a pair of sideways letters faintly inscribed into the obverse fields on either side of Liberty's neck. That to the left appears to be a "C", while that to the right is clearly an "S". Further, these same letters can be seen even more faintly scribbled in the reverse fields, on the far side of each wing. Talk about double trouble!
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

Strong details remain on this relatively bright example that appears to have once been quite reflective, as that is how the protected areas look. The marks are consistent with the assigned grade, and... |
