(About The Images)
1886 NGC MS-64. 1886 NGC MS-64.
Lot Title: 1886 NGC MS-64.
Description: Distinction between proof and business strike coins for 1886 can be trying at times, but in this case, there is no doubt whatsoever about this being a commercial strike, since the dies were cracked and assuredly right on the cusp of being retired. An extensive die crack encircles the entire obverse, and numerous spindly cracks encircle the reverse as well. For the collector who wants to be sure beyond doubt that he is getting the business strike that he paid for, THIS is what you want!

Technical aspirations are about all one could hope for at MS-64. Luster is prominent, and the strike is actually quite decent for dies so close to failure. Though the left ear of corn is practically mush, remaining details are sharp enough on balance, except the stars, of course, which are thoroughly influenced by the cracking of the die. A couple of trivial, shallow marks can be seen on Liberty's portrait, and what may appear at first glance to be tiny scratches attached to her face are actually clash marks. Some additional planchet voids in the field right of the Roman V are as-struck, and there are several additional tiny planchet voids on this same side.

1886 PCGS MS-64 CAC.
The Nickel-To-A-Doughnut Collection. A scintillating MS-64 nickel, the surfaces exhibit wonderful, near-chromelike champagne-silver brilliance. Although the central details have been brought up very...

1886, 1887, and 1909, all NGC PF-64.
French Connection Estate. 1886 and 1887 feature pristine white brilliance and obvious cameo characteristics, though perhaps NGC deemed the mirrors not deep enough to warrant the designation. 1909...
347The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$310.00
1886 and 1912-S, both PCGS GD-6.
Indisputably full rims surround both sides of both these keys to the Liberty nickel series, and that spells considerable value to many astute collectors who enjoy strong quality even in basic grade. ...
348The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$675.00
1886 NGC PF-65.
Pristine quality exemplifies the best characteristic of this attractive proof. Both side feature glistening silver-grey sheen and no spots nor stains to distract the eye. On the contrary, along with...
343The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$525.00
1886 PCGS PF-64.
Hazy mustard-tan patina suppresses the brilliance normally associated with proof nickels, and this may explain the PF-64 assessment. While struck with extreme precision, neither side has much...
919The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$525.00
1886 PCGS PF-63.
Proofs for 1886 are frequently called into duty for circulation strike collections, being so much more available in high grade. The presence of a die crack at 5:00 and prominent luster certainly...
516The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$725.00
1886 NGC PF-65 CAC.
Definition is astoundingly sharp, even better than one might expect from a proof striking, and a touch of cameo contrast adds class to the overall presentation. A small, oblong depression in the...
256The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$725.00
1886 PCGS PF-65 CAC.
The rarity and expense of 1886 in business strike format, especially in high grade, leads many collectors to substitute a proof example in their sets. This particular proof shines with pale-gold...
202The Collectors' Auction 2009 on 10/16/2009$650.00
1886 NGC PF-65.
Demand for the key dates in the Liberty nickel series has expanded to the point that proof examples of 1886 are more and more often used in business strike collections, particularly at the "gem"...
487The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$360.00
1886 Liberty nickel, PCGS F-12
Only the second letter is missing from LIBERTY. A supremely original coin with surfaces that, considering the amount of circulation, are remarkably free of blemishes.
488The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$1,550.00
1886 Liberty nickel, reverse rim cud AU-58
It is sorely tempting to assign a mint state grade to this coin, as the obverse really is just about "all there". However, a mere breath of friction touches the highpoint detail of the hair, and the...
489The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$625.00
1886 Liberty nickel, NGC PR-65
Even persistent inspection of this coin's surfaces really doesn't reveal why NGC graded this coin only PF-65. It simply appears to be nicer than that. Excellent contrast is begging for a "cameo"...
1130The Midwest Summer Sale 2006 on 07/21/2006$450.00
1886 XF Cleaned.
A net VF grade semi-key example due to cleaning, but with full XF+ detail. The evidence of being cleaned has been slightly hidden by a natural, very light russet haze over much of the surfaces. Nice...
452The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$540.00
1886 XF-40.
In terms of scarcity, this date is secondary only to the 1885. This desirable middle grade example, with a pleasing silver aspect, is an above average specimen that is devoid of any unsightly...
