(About The Images)
1892 MS-63/prooflike obverse. 1892 MS-63/prooflike obverse.
Lot Title: 1892 MS-63/prooflike obverse.
Description: Early issues in all of the Barber series are known to sometimes have prooflike characteristics from new dies, and the obverse of this opulent 1892 is noticeably prooflike on the obverse, in spite of considerable citrus-grey patina seen in the fields and covering Liberty's portrait. Reflectivity leaves little to the imagination, as those areas not inhibited by tone appear to display a full six inches of depth. And, as one might expect from such early dies, obverse details are exceptionally sharp, with Barber's monogram at the bottom of the neck exceedingly so. Grade is determined by tiny wispy marks on the cheek and in the obverse right field, their effect minimized by the extensive toning.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

724The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$925.00
1892 PCGS MS-63.
MCA Set. Apple-green patina in the fields merges with coral-gold to produce toning of inimitable style and grace for the obverse, while this stunning color scheme joins with brilliant magenta-peach...
654The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$1,050.00
1892 PCGS MS-64.
1892 ranks among the common Barber half-dollars, but many collectors prefer the first-of-issue year for their type sets. No disappointment here, as this inaugural example displays superb proportions...
655The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$1,250.00
1892 PCGS MS-64 (CAC).
Berry Tree Collection. While the inaugural issue can occasionally be located with prooflike qualities, that is not the case here, with this a superb, choice original coin showing fair luster beneath...
715The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$625.00
1892 NGC MS-62.
Seemingly a shoe-in for upgrade consideration, the whole coin shows a notable lack of marks, especially the reverse, which appears to grade fully MS-65 all by itself. However, some faint slidemark...
716The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$750.00
1892 PCGS MS-63.
7070 Collection. Important to type collectors as the first date in the series, many will also be drawn to the generally white and moderately lustrous appearance. The obverse bears slightly better...
831The Collectors' Auction 2011 on 10/21/2011$1,350.00
1892 PCGS PF-64 CAC.
Physical allure is considerably better than might be implied by only a PF-64 grade, as the surfaces come alive under illumination and reveal highly attractive electric-jade toning, along with morsels...
713The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$925.00
1892 AU, 1894-O AU details/altered surfaces, and 1912-D AU...
1892 provides much proof character, and were it not for faint rub on the cheek, this would be a really choice BU coin. 1894 has AU details, but has been rather badly mistreated and heavily retoned in...
714The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$675.00
1892 NGC MS-62.
Many type collectors like to find first-date representatives, and as good luck would have it, Barber coins of all denominations often have prooflike characteristics for 1892. Slight reflectivity...
715The Midwest Summer Sale 2011 on 07/29/2011$6,000.00
1892 NGC PF-66+Star.
Love at first sight is a term most commonly applied toward movies and romance novels, for which the heroine instantly becomes the object of desire or infatuation. "Scotsman Cataloger's Choice...
496The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$425.00
1892 NGC AU-58.
One can easily surmise that the submitter to NGC of this inaugural Barber half-dollar expected a BU grade, since the surfaces retain outstanding white brilliance and a full helping of cartwheel...
497The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$475.00
1892 MS-60.
Despite considerable toning on both sides, it is readily apparent that the obverse gives a dead-on impersonation of a proof. Indeed, the obverse might well offer the equivalent of "deep cameo"...
580The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$350.00
1892 AU.
Examples of the inaugural Barber issues (dimes, quarters and the present half-dollar) are occasionally known to be prooflike, and unexpected reflectivity may be seen in the fields on the obverse,...
582The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$875.00
1892 PCGS MS-64.
Cartwheel effect labors beneath a persistent veneer of graphite-grey patina that occasionally gathers into even darker areas on the design highpoints. Some of the peripheral areas actually manage to...
583The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$3,500.00
1892 PCGS MS-66.
The Philadelphia Barber half-dollar was inaugurated by an inauspicious mintage of only a million coins struck in 1892, but many pieces were set aside as a "new coin", and it is not rare even in high...
486The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$340.00
1892 AU.
A moderately thick layer of dusky olive-gold patina drapes across both sides, yet fails to completely suppress underlying cartwheel effect. A shallow, intermittent hairline scratch extends from the...
781The Midwest Summer Sale on 07/24/2009$1,650.00
1892 PF-64 Cameo..
Removed from an NGC PF-64 CAM holder. While the contrast is undeniable, this coin does have a few more hairlines than might be expected of the grade, though it is almost impossible for a coin of this...
584The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$240.00
1892 and 1894 Barber half-dollars
The 1892 grades VF-30, and despite a very faint cleaning, it need not be "net graded". A grade of XF-45 for the 1894 requires additional mention of several pinpricks on the portrait that detract a...
626The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$370.00
1892 AU-58.
Although the reverse is Mint State and actually close to MS-62, the pale orchid color that bathes the obverse downplays a faint amount of rub on Liberty’s cheek and lower neck. Brimming with luster...
622The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$700.00
1892 PCGS MS-63.
This popular first date of issue has a mintage below one million. It glistens with a silklike image enhanced with a warm golden iridescence. Minute marks and faint hairlines are mainly assigned to...
623The Midwest Winter Sale 2007 on 02/09/2007$925.00
1892 PCGS MS-64.
This is an original coin with nice luster and a strong strike. It is fully brilliant with a bit of toning on the portrait.
