(About The Images)
1896-S PCGS GD-4. 1896-S PCGS GD-4.
Lot Title: 1896-S PCGS GD-4.
Description: All of the three "big keys" for the Barber quarter series are known to be most available only in the lowest circulated grades, and the 1896-S fits the mold perfectly. Considerable wear has reduced this example to practically only outlines of the major devices, although remarkably, the obverse rim remains fully delineated, and the reverse rim just barely fades away in a couple of areas. Strictly original in every possible way, the grade is a result of only honest wear, and the silver-graphite color is absolutely perfect for a coin at this level. Date and mintmark are bold.

456The Collectors' Auction - 2014 on 10/17/2014$525.00
1896-S NGC GD-4.
Brock Megran Collection. Mintage: 188,039. The ears of "Y" can still be discerned on the headband, though nothing else remains of LIBERTY. Each side displays a flat yet bold outline of the central...
595The Midwest Summer Sale 2014 on 07/18/2014$1,050.00
1896-S ANACS VG-8.
Quality should prove worthy of VG-8 at any time, in any holder, as the headband essentially shows "LIB..TY" -- more than ample for a VG grade. Further examination reveals very strong rims, most of...
651The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$600.00
1896-S Good.
Strong, full rims on both sides (not just the obverse) indicate a G-6 grade, and closer inspection finds the stand of "L" and most of "TY" stubbornly showing on the headband. The entire surface...
652The Collectors' Auction 2013 on 10/18/2013$1,150.00
1896-S PCGS VG-8.
Obviously original, though the reverse is a full two shades darker than average for well-circulated silver. A pyramid of deep ebony toning also erupts from the obverse, ceding to more typical...
539The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$590.00
1896-S PCGS GD-4.
The reverse just manages to hold on to a fully connected rim, which is not usually the case for G-4, and even the "Y" in the headband shows up under magnification. Needless to say, this is a strictly...
523The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$925.00
1896-S PCGS GD-6 CAC.
Exceptionally original with no problems whatsoever, the accurate G-6 grade derived entirely from honest wear. "TY" is just visible on the headband, and the rim on either side of the coin shows no...
393The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$650.00
1896-S NGC GD-6.
The obverse could not be more perfect for the grade. "TY" is just visible on the headband, and Liberty's ear displays very good sharpness. Central definition on the reverse is not nearly so nice,...
488The Midwest Summer Sale 2010 on 07/23/2010$425.00
1896-S PCGS AG-3.
Blatantly original in every sense, dove-grey surfaces are dappled with leaden accents and a few ancient carbon patches on the left side of the reverse. The obverse presents as a full good,...
385The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/12/2010$1,200.00
1896-S PCGS VG-8.
Ultra-original dove-grey patina provides the finest possible visual presence for a coin in this grade (VG-8), and "L....TY" are just visible on the headband. About half the motto on the reverse is...
637The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$650.00
1896-S PCGS GD-6.
98% complete rims fall just shy of perfection at the left side of the reverse where the field nearly merges, but the presence of a bold "Y" on the headband suggests the "choice good" grade. This coin...
638The Midwest Winter Sale 2009 on 02/13/2009$750.00
1896-S PCGS GD-6.
Considerable patina layers each side with heavy lead-grey tone and some old grunge. There can be no question whatsoever as to this key date's originality! "TY" partially show on the headband,...
552The Midwest Winter Sale 2008 on 02/08/2008$575.00
1896-S Barber quarter, PCGS G-04
The final letter of LIBERTY displays on the headband, and therefore, those who like to see highly precise grade assignments would call this G-05, suggesting it as a premium piece (which it is). The...
1058The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$825.00
1896-S VG-10.
An undamaged specimen from the third lowest mintage output from this series. The surfaces have an original antique silver aspect, plus the rims are complete.
533The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$525.00
1896-S About Good.
A rare coin, regardless of condition. This example has a full Good+ obverse, but the rims are not full on the reverse. A solid date and mint mark have been preserved.
534The Midwest Winter Sale on 02/17/2006$775.00
1896-S GD-6+.
Most wouldn't argue with this coin being graded VG-8, but Scotsman Auction Co. tries to error on the conservative side with raw coins. The remaining detail certainly appears VG. The contact marks...
