Lot Title:
|
1915 AU/whizzed.
|
Description:
|
What appears at first to be absurdly strong luster turns out to be evidence that this coin has been whizzed, with subtle retoning responsible for the nearly original appearance. Clever perhaps, but then again, perhaps not so clever since 1915 is the final key to the Barber half-dollar series, and this was probably a terrific example, given at least extremely-fine details, prior to the senseless, doltish "enhancement". As expected (and perhaps intended) by the whizzing process, most tiny blemishes have been effaced, but there is a number of minor circulation marks that would be expected of this grade level.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

Liberty's portrait bears ivory-grey gloss that seems a bit unnatural, the same also true of the eagle's motif. Some toning darkens the fields and helps downplay signs of an old cleaning. LIBERTY... |

1915 PCGS VF-20.

Always desirable as a key to the series, 1915 saw a mintage of only 138,000 - very limited by Barber half standards. Furthermore, while low-grade examples are usually available, any example like the... |

Surfaces exhibit hardly any hairlines, which is unusual for a proof coin at the PF-63 level. However, some steely haze propagates over the upper and lower edges of the obverse, and thoroughly... |

1915 NGC VF-20.

At the "very-fine" grade level, 1915 must surely be considered fully a key to the Barber half-dollar series, surpassed in scarcity by perhaps a half-dozen other issues. This is an incredibly... |
